Article by Deborah Lloyd, Reiki Master
Frequently, as a Reiki Master, I receive emails and phone calls from Reiki practitioners who have not used Reiki for several years. Often, they tell me their stories of how much they love Reiki and how they used it consistently for a few years. Then, “life got in the way” and practicing Reiki dwindled to not using it at all. Usually, they ask if they need to come to a class again, or what they need to do to rekindle their connectedness to the healing energies.
The answer to this is simple: all you have to do is start using it again! However, experiencing a reattunement can be very helpful and a powerful kickstart.
After a recent call, I spent some time reflecting on how and why this happens to many Reiki practitioners. And, more importantly, why they yearn to return to having Reiki become a part of their lives again.
One thought I had is how all of us can take the most important things in life for granted. We can get so tied up with all the demands and obligations in our lives, we allow the most essential parts of ourselves to float to the background. We become so stressed and fatigued that the thought of “doing one more thing” is overwhelming. Often, that extra thing is meditation, prayer, Reiki or whatever we do to connect to the Source. Because the connection is not as visible as a task at work, or a child needing dinner and a bath, it slides to the background of our lives. Soon, we feel out of balance but have difficulties in finding the time to create balance in our lives again.
Then, the miracle of Reiki happens – we get the urge, the spiritual call, to come back to it. This is truly the most exciting aspect of the process! Although we may have not practiced Reiki for a few months, or a few years, it beckons us back home. We are reminded of the loving peace and presence it had in our lives. The desire in our hearts (that had never left, but was only covered up) grows again. Suddenly, all our tasks and commitments seem less important, and reigniting our commitment to Reiki practice becomes a priority.
Often, when I receive one of these calls or emails, the person is apologetic and makes derogatory statements about herself/himself. There is no reason to apologize or feel shameful about being remiss in Reiki practice. It is never too late to return to our inner desires and needs. It is part of the journey on earth.
Rather, we can feel joyful that we are now making the effort to reconnect to the Universal Life Force energy. It is good to find comfort in the fact the Universe never rejects us, but instead welcomes us with open arms!
We Reiki practitioners are called to be the face of this warm and inviting welcome. Let us always be encouraging towards anyone who is returning to Reiki practice.
