Article by Reiki Master Judy Camblor
In the practice of Reiki, practitioners may work with crystals to help bring the chakra system of the body into balance by absorbing the energy of each chakra and transmuting it to bring the chakras back to their natural vibratory state. When conducting a Reiki session, during the Byosen scanning portion of the session, I am able to determine how the vibration of each chakra feels; whether it is too open and too active, or if it is slow, sluggish or closed. Byosen scanning at the beginning of a Reiki session allows a practitioner to direct the Life Force Energy (LFE) into the client or patient and receive energy information in the hands and also through the practitioner’s intuitive guidance.
In this article, we will cover the lower chakras and their corresponding crystals to give my readers an overview of the lower chakras before they begin working with them.
First, let’s talk about the chakras and what they are.
Chakras are the energy centers of the energy body. Chakra is the Sanskrit word for ‘wheel.’ Each chakra regulates different organs in the endocrine system. There are seven main chakras that are part of the energy body. I will cover the crystals that can be used with each to attain the desired vibrational balance. I will also briefly cover tidbits of information and the crystals that correspond with each that help to counter-balance an over-active chakra.
Root Chakra – Muladhara
The Root Chakra is located between the first and third vertebrae between the anus and genitals. Its color is RED. This chakra corresponds to our survival instincts and the body’s physical needs like food, water, and shelter. It affects the parts of the body such as the blood, the bladder, the male reproductive organs, the spine, the nervous system, the testes, and the vagina. This chakra can become unbalanced when we live in fear for lack of abundance and economic stability. The stress and mental heaviness caused by worrying about your finances will not only throw your Root Chakra out of balance but, can also affect the balance of the next two chakras, the Sacral Chakra and the Solar Plexus Chakra because all three chakras represent the physical being. In my practice, I direct the LFE from the Root Chakra down the legs towards the knees and the feet. The legs are our body’s support system, and the energy can become stuck in the knees, ankles, and soles of the feet. So I typically work on clearing the Root Chakra energy all the way down and out through the feet.
There are quite a few crystals that can be used to balance the Root Chakra in the colors of red or black. In my practice, I like to use Red Jasper to open or re-energize the Root Chakra when I find it to be sluggish or in a low vibratory state. I also place a piece of Hematite or Black Tourmaline between the feet for balance.
Red Jasper helps one to be grounded to the stabilizing energies of the Earth. It can also activate and move the energy in the Root Chakra. Hematite provides for smooth grounding and brings tranquility and emotional clarity. Black Tourmaline is used to provide grounding between the Root Chakra and the Earth.
There are also crystals that can be used to counter-balance the Root Chakra when it is working outside of its normal limits. It is possible that a chakra can also become unbalanced when it is working too much. Red energy can be very powerful, therefore, stones of a cooler shade or color such as blue or turquoise can assist in lowering the intensity of this energy.
The crystal I use to bring a Root Chakra that is overworked back into balance is Lapis Lazuli. Lapis Lazuli is typically used for the third-eye chakra due to its attribute of being a stone of total awareness. Whenever I feel that a person I treat has issues worrying about their future and stability, I will use Lapis to bring them to a state of awareness.
Sacral Chakra – Swadhisthan
The Sacral Chakra is located in the area of the genitals just below the navel. Its color is ORANGE. This chakra corresponds to a person’s creative energy, the emotions, and the body’s physical desires. It affects the skin, the female reproductive system, the mammary glands, and the kidneys. Symptoms like allergies and depression can manifest in the physical body when this chakra is out of balance. The Sacral Chakra can become unbalanced by circumstances like not expressing creativity. Creativity is not just something that is expressed in a form of art; something as simple as working on a hobby can help to raise the vibration of this chakra. Another way that the Sacral Chakra can become unbalanced is by suppressing emotions or being highly emotional. Sexual desire and identity reside in this chakra as well. Therefore, if a person suffers from a form of sexual dysfunction or perhaps is unclear as to his or her sexual orientation, these circumstances could cause an imbalance in the Sacral Chakra. Unresolved emotions or having an overly or under active sexual drive can also create an imbalance.
We store all our emotions–both negative and positive–in this chakra. We digest the emotions we experience in this chakra on a daily basis. In my practice, I direct LFE in a clockwise circular motion to promote smooth digestion of both emotional energy and nutrients because our emotions and lack of expression of emotions cause emotional and physical constipation.
There are various crystals that can be used to balance the Sacral Chakra. In my practice, I like to use Carnelian to open and re-energize the Sacral Chakra when I find it to be sluggish or in a low vibratory state. Carnelian is a great stone for creativity and fertility. Carnelian also helps to maintain awareness. It is important to be aware of emotions that may be affecting us, and by using Carnelian during my healing sessions, I assist my clients in releasing any emotional baggage that may be blocking this chakra. At times I may use various pieces of Carnelian depending on the person’s emotional state when they visit me.
There are also crystals that can be used to counter-balance the Sacral Chakra when it is working outside of its normal limits. As previously stated, a chakra can become out of balance when it is working too much or too little. The crystals I use to soothe a Sacral Chakra that is overworked are Amber and purple gemstones like Amethyst, Quartz, and Tourmaline.
Amber is actually not a stone but a resin created from the sap of trees that were on the Earth millions of years ago. Still, it is a fantastic stone for creativity.
Amethyst is typically used for the Crown Chakra. However, its cool color allows to bring an overly active Sacral Chakra back down to its natural vibration.
Solar Plexus Chakra – Manipura
The Solar Plexus Chakra is located just below the diaphragm in the navel area. This chakra represents your personal power, and its color is YELLOW. The Solar Plexus Chakra is directly connected to the adrenal glands, the breath, the digestive organs, and the skin. The adrenal glands regulate hormones vital to life. Many practitioners that I teach ask the question, “Is this where the ego is located?” The answer to that is no. The ego is part of the mind. The Solar Plexus Chakra is the seat of our personal power. It is where we digest all of life, digest food, set our boundaries, but also live life through our own personal magnificence and connect to our own divine purpose.
You know that feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when you sense that something just isn’t right, or it could be that the feeling is one of instant trust and confidence? This is where that “gut feeling” comes from. Well, really it comes from the perception in your Third Eye Chakra, but it is communicated directly to your Solar Plexus Chakra from the Third Eye Chakra in a way that we can understand that something, someone or someplace is just not good for us (or maybe great for us). In my Reiki practice when I am treating someone I don’t know, I like to spend a little extra time in this chakra. I find that I usually get divine messages or spiritually guided messages about the person, and I am able to use the information received here to correctly direct the LFE to the chakras or parts of the body that need it most. This is also the location of your self-confidence. I set the intention for my clients to raise their self-confidence if I receive messages that it is low and could use a boost. I spend extra time here to make sure that this chakra is clear before moving on. As with the Sacral Chakra, I will clear the Solar Plexus Chakra by moving my hands in a clockwise motion (counter-clockwise when the person is laying on their stomach) to promote healthy digestion.
The crystals I typically use for this chakra are Citrine or Yellow Calcite to open this chakra and raise its energy to the natural vibratory state. You can also use crystals in green and purple tones to calm an overactive Solar Plexus Chakra such as Malachite, Peridot, or Amethyst.
Citrine is the best crystal to use at the Solar Plexus Chakra. Just like the beautiful golden rays contained within this crystal, so should our self-confidence shine. This crystal brings clarity and balance to the self especially if the user is looking for confidence in taking on a new direction in life. This crystal also assists any digestive issues whether they be mental, emotional or physical. As the chakra of power and vitality, Citrine compliments this chakra perfectly.
Yellow/Golden Calcite is a crystal of rejuvenation and reflection. We use this crystal to assist in the reflection of our inner brilliance, our power, and our vitality.
Malachite is known as a stone of transformation. While this stone is typically used for the Heart and Throat Chakras, its properties work well for the Solar Plexus Chakra as an equalizing and balancing agent. Where else would energy of transformation be needed if not in the Solar Plexus Chakra? Since Malachite assists in looking deep within ourselves, it allows us to recognize where transformation needs to take place in our lives. The warm and friendly energy of Peridot can be used to cleanse and stimulate the Heart and Solar Plexus Chakras. Peridot helps to regulate the cycles of one’s life.
So there you have the first three chakras and some of their corresponding crystals. I have provided you with images of stones from my own personal collection in order to help you associate the descriptions of the crystals with what they look like.
My next article will be dedicated solely to the Heart Chakra. The reason for this individual article is because I would like to address the importance of the Heart Chakra beyond the obvious things we already assume that the Heart Chakra would correspond with. It is the chakra that connects the lower chakras (body) with the higher chakras (mind and spirit).
Wishing you a day full of Love and Light!
