Article by Deborah Lloyd, Reiki Master
Purple has always been one of my favorite colors. I’ve always enjoyed wearing purple sweaters, scarves and other items. Even our wedding colors were purple and white; I especially loved my bouquet of white roses and snowball chrysanthemums, with highlights of dark purple status. Purple has always made me feel joyful and serene.
One of my earliest understandings of purple is that it is associated with royalty – rich velvet capes and large gems. While I have very humble origins, I admit that purple always gave me feelings of abundance and strength. I felt “rich” when I surrounded myself with the color purple.
How different colors affect our energy systems has been one of the most interesting areas of study for me since learning Reiki and researching the chakra system. Color therapy is the application of this knowledge. We can enhance individual chakra functions by adding specific colors to our daily lives. Feeling insecure? Wear red or brown clothing; eat bright red apples; add red candles or table placemats to your dining room table. Want to bring a love relationship into your life? Attract the right person by wearing the colors green or pink. The list goes on. Each color has associated energies and functions; the more you learn, the more you can manifest your desired goals.
The color purple is a combination of red and blue. Red (associated with the Root chakra) can represent down-to-earth, secure practicalities, while darker shades of blue (the third eye chakra) are associated with intuitive abilities. The color purple is associated with the Crown chakra, and this chakra balances our thinking minds and our spiritual self. Our minds function to combine our intellectual abilities with our psychic abilities – the mind/spirit correlation. Practicing Reiki also enhances the mind/spirit merger. We bring our thinking intellect into sessions – create a peaceful atmosphere, place our hands on various body parts, listen to our client’s breathing patterns, etc. More importantly, we bring a spiritual aspect: permitting the Divine Flow to affect our clients’ energy system and recognizing the Energy is doing the work, not us.
The color white is also associated with the Crown chakra. Frequently, people see flashes of purple or white in their third eye vision while meditating or praying. It is not uncommon for Reiki practitioners to see rays of light coming down upon their client. White is symbolic of purity and unconditional love. When we become aware the Divine Spirit is always within us, we know unconditional love in a new and more powerful way. We know we are always loved.
Learning more about the color purple has been an affirmation for me. I have always been connected to the Divine Spirit, although there were times when I lived in a state of non-awareness. Now, when I do not “feel” the connection, it is so much easier to change course and become reconnected. It can be as simple as starting the Reiki flow and “seeing” the color purple, or the bright rays of white light, in my mind’s eye. Having a deeper understanding of working with colors is truly one of the best blessings of Reiki!

Nice article. I love everything purple 🙂 I have found myself so attracted to Amethyst (In purplish blue hue) and after wearing it as a pendant, I find it very calming to my otherwise anxious self.

I am obsessed with purple and all my friends send me purple things. When I was little I had a purple bedspread and was allowed to choose wallpaper that was different shades of purple flowers. My bridesmaids were three shades of purple and still I love it. If I have a lot of purple around me my heart feels really happy.
Deborah,
Thank you for sharing your love of purple! Its energies do make us feel happy.
Blessings to you,
Deborah

I enjoyed reading this article. I too am drawn to this colour, and I often see purple/violet when meditating. I also so practise Reiki under the name of Violet Skies Reiki Healing! I too appreciate colour therapy. Being artistic I’ve always been drawn to bright, beautiful colours, but I am beginning to realise that colours are much more powerful in their own right. xx
Tracey,
Thank you for sharing your experience with purple and colors. Everything has energy and colors bring in strong vibrations.

Dear Deborah,
I have always loved purple and was born in the month of February so my oldest stone is when I was 9 and my parents gave me a amythest pendant…I still have it at age 52. I painted my first house’s bedroom purple… and plan to do that with this one…and put purple in the hallway and the bathroom…. in different hues…my first husband hated the color…must have been a good way to realize to NOT marry him…but hindsight… But I am going to be getting my Reiki level 2 this month and knowing about colors will help me greatly with the training… level one didn’t mention it. Blessings to you. And thanks again for your wisdom.

Thank you for this article on the color purple I have had questions about this as my journey into the healing arts of reiki. I have just noticed that when I meditate or even taking a walk and looking into the sun I see bursts of purple light all the time now I close my eyes and see this beautiful purple light almost plum pink purple. Very comforting and I was wondering why i see the color purple.
