Several decades ago, when my husband and I participated in a marriage enrichment program, we learned about the concept of interdependence. This concept is defined as a relationship of mutual reliance. As single persons, each one has different strengths, and each one lives an independent life. The marriage vows change this reality into one of interdependence and equality, with love and respect. There is no room for a dominant spouse, expecting the other to follow every command and whim. One person should not be the sole decision-maker, while the other depends on him/her to define their lives. The image given was tall trees that become intertwined – while each could stand on its own, a mutual decision was made to grow together, becoming the strongest tree in the forest.
This concept can be utilized in how we visualize the role of the Reiki practitioner. The Divine Spirit can bless any person on earth with healing energies. Due to the unlimited-possibilities aspects of the Divine, a person can heal through miraculous events, and Reiki would not need to be a part of it. In fact, this happens every day as people request help through prayer, and the Divine grants the blessing.
In the same way, the Reiki practitioner could learn other ways to bring healing into people’s lives. It is happening all around us – nutritionists teach us which foods are healthy, and which ones are not; physical therapists give us exercises to build strength in injured body parts; doctors prescribe helpful medicine – many examples in our world.
Yet, we all know there is a very special aspect to the healing energies of Reiki that no other modality has. In the type of Reiki in which I was attuned, it is called Universal Life Force Energy. It manifests the energies of the Divine. This is a perfect example of 2 + 2 = something much greater than 4!
The Divine has guided each, and every one of us, to become a Reiki practitioner. Each of us is a vehicle for the healing available to all people on earth. We are human beings, just like our clients, with our own strengths. Our greatest strength as Reiki practitioners is this – we answered the invitation to bring healing to others in a most powerful way. We had to get out of our comfort zones and listen to the quiet urgings to take the plunge and learn Reiki.
Let us return to the image of the two strong trees in the forest. Each of us could have had a comfortable life, without experiencing and learning how to give Reiki. But, when we became intertwined with the healing energies of Reiki, we became stronger in many, many ways. Our life paths were forever changed. We healed parts of ourselves that lived within us. We became more compassionate, kind and loving. We changed our thoughts and realized actions create energy; we understand how this relates to the process of healing.
We are One – with each other and with the Universal Life Force Energy. This is the greatest concept of interdependence.
