In the fourteen years that I have been a Reiki practitioner, there has been tremendous growth. There are many more Reiki practitioners and Reiki Masters. A higher percentage of people have heard of Reiki and are curious about it. There is a proliferation of books, webinars and websites on the Internet. It is a blessing to be part of this change, bringing positive energies into our world.
Sometimes, I wonder if the spread of Reiki will “peak” and start to slow down. Certainly, I hope that will never happen. What can you, and I, do to insure Reiki continues to grow?
One way is to pass down Reiki to the younger generations of our own families. Modeling the daily use of Reiki is one sure way to do this. When talking with relatives, we can sprinkle little tidbits describing our personal use of Reiki within these conversations. For example, if you had a minor injury and Reiki was a part of a quick recovery, you can mention that aspect in a conversation. Or, when a relative mentions using sleeping pills to be able to sleep at night, you can talk about how Reiki helps you to fall asleep. The list goes on.
Using Reiki during a family event can be a very effective way to teach others about the effectiveness of Reiki. If a relative complains of having a headache, offer to give Reiki for 5 or 10 minutes, and the headache will lessen, or go away. Use Reiki when a child falls and scrapes a knee. Or, give Reiki to a sibling who is complaining of an aching back or knees.

Probably, the least effective way to teach others about the many blessings of Reiki is to talk about it incessantly! It is possible to make others leery, and weary, about this alternative modality. In fact, if you bring up the subject too frequently, you can actually create barriers to someone wanting to learn more about it.
As all of us know, role modeling by parents, teachers and other important adults in children’s lives is how they learn to become strong and responsible adults. When we model healthy and balanced lives, our children and grandchildren will notice and practice what we do. If you stay calm, when everyone else around you is anxious and worried, children will see the value of a peaceful way of being. When we extend kindness and compassionate touch, children will see our gestures and model the golden rule of treating others as they would want to be treated.
One of the best gifts of Reiki is its growing accessibility, to all people, young and old alike. It is truly a practical, easy-to-learn way of living a meaningful life. When a person truly embraces this belief, the natural result is wanting to share it with the people we love the most – our family members. We want to pass it down to future generations, so that Reiki is not lost and need to be “rediscovered” yet again. It is exciting to know our younger family members have more opportunities to learn Reiki, at a much younger age than many of us were when we found it.
Reiki is the gift that keeps on giving….let us always have the courage to share it!
