Article by Reiki Master Sunetra Dasgupta
Hello, Beautiful Souls!
How are you doing today? I am back with my next article and hope you enjoy it as much as you enjoyed the last one!
In Reiki, the ethics and principles are considered in the highest regard. The three most important ethics of Reiki are
1. Never give Reiki for free
We are asked to always have an energy exchange for Reiki or compare Reiki with gold, for the simple reason, when things are given complimentary people do not have gratitude for it or is just taken for granted, and in Reiki gratitude is the foremost important thing. It doesn’t matter a person has faith or not, but gratitude is important.
2. Do not heal without permission
The Reiki ethics strictly mentions that we should not heal anyone without permission; it’s a different story of course when we give healing to plants, animals, or someone who is in a comatose state. It’s said that the reason is: there are many people who may not want to get healed, or they are just happy in whatever state they are for whatever reason. We are no one to interfere with a person’s freewill.
3. Do not get attached to the outcome
Reiki always heals for the highest good; we cannot “force” the energy to flow in a certain direction. If we get attached to the outcome, we are not only blocking our own progress, but we fail to see the goodness that Reiki brings to us. Sometimes Reiki manifest our heart desires, sometimes not. As Reiki will give us what we need and not what we want.
The above three Reiki ethics are ingrained in us since the first level, but somewhere we forget them, or we think that Reiki is such a beautiful energy no one can disregard its effects! There are so many beautiful souls out there who give a lot of free healing to people all over the world, Thanks to social media, people post on Facebook, Instagram etc. how they would send healing to everyone, and loads of people would accept and show a lot of gratitude to them. I have immense respect for people who do and I was one of them who would send healing to people every Friday who are there on my broadcast list and thought I was doing a wonderful job along with many other by sending beautiful energies to everyone and it would help people a lot.
One fine day, I got a whatsapp message from this person to remove her from my broadcast list; I did without asking any question, as it was her choice. Once I informed her that she was removed, I got back a long message which I quote below
“You are a Reiki Teacher, do not consider yourself as God. I have not asked you for any healing, then who the hell asked you to send me any. If you think I need any help from you or anyone else who does ooga booga you are mistaken.”
Of course, the message has been shortened and toned down by removing the expletives, but her message did not hurt me, what dawned on me was that I kept sending healing to people, irrespective of they wanted it or not, they may not even have gratitude either. Was I almost forcing my “goodness” on them? I do not know, but really gave me a “Mikao Usui Moment”, where he started crying when he saw the lepers he had healed started begging again.
As a healer, we become so empathetic, that when we see someone in trouble or pain, our Heart chakra keeps expanding, and we give them healing. When someone says they are in pain or trouble our almost automatic response is “I shall send healing to you.” We don’t ask why and what happened, we just want it to heal, we don’t even bother about the energy exchange! I have got so many responses which says, no don’t heal or no I don’t want healing. I think it’s high time we stop taking it for granted that, everyone who is hurt shall need healing, and before sending let’s just ASK and take some kind of ENERGY EXCHANGE. By giving it away without any energy exchange we are not holding the energies in the highest regard, which is unfair on our part. If we really want to do some charity healing, let’s give it to Mother Earth every day. If Mother Earth gets nourished we all shall will.
Also before sending the article to Reiki Rays, I had sent it to my Reiki colleague and Reiki Rays writer Vedant Borah, to ask him his opinion, and he gave me such a beautiful insight, that I couldn’t hold myself back from sharing this with all of you. He said when a person is in pain/trouble and you are unable to take permission from them, you can heal them only if you are also getting affected by it directly or indirectly. If I see an accident on the road which doesn’t even affect me, I shall not send Reiki without permission, but I shall pray for them. Pray that all is well, and they live a happy life etc. whatever the condition is.
We are just mere mediums, chosen by this beautiful modality, we cannot consider ourselves God. Till the time we don’t have permission, we should not heal others or their karmas, it backfires on us. When we send healing (paid or unpaid), we know that healing works for the greatest good. But some people do not consider as humans, we are as basic as anyone else, or as special as anyone else, the energies are universal and it’s our souls call to harness this energies or not. We cannot manipulate energies to give a person their desired result, people will get what they need, what we can do is we can ease the process.
A number of times we have seen in Reiki healing, that a relation breaks off, or a person who has been suffering for a long time, transits from this third dimension physical world, and we get blamed for the relation breaking up or the person dying or many other things. The fact is the relationship was not good for them, or the person has suffered far too long! Their soul decided to take a call.
I have learned my lessons well and in a hard way, even though Mikao Usui had put the ethics out there in black and white, somewhere we are so engrossed and embraced in the love of Reiki, we tend to forget these tiny details which may impact us in a negative manner.
Let’s not have yet another “Mikao Usui Moment” in our lives, he took the brunt for us, and yet we keep repeating the same mistakes! Let’s learn from each other and have a very happy and a safe practice. Even after healing a certain situation if things don’t go our way, just thank Reiki for showing you the right path, which may not always be easy but shall be worth it. Let’s concentrate more on healing ourselves, our chakras, meridians etc. and as we align to the energies of the Universe, things will automatically start falling in place. As for others, when we are healing, let’s give them a disclaimer, Reiki will work for the greatest good. If this is right for you, it shall work out, else it won’t.
Happy Reiking Guys!
Blessed Be <3

Lovely article Sunetra Mam
Thanks for the article with good reminders. I’d like to ask, as a reiki rookie, sometimes I will send reiki to someone from afar but I stipulate that I’d like them to receive the reiki only if they are open to it. Is this ok? I’ve always wondered.
Thanks for the article….I always try to remember to say few words before giving Reiki… May the Highest Good of Reiki flow to a person…or situation….etc….If any body rejects….Reiki please flow to Mother Earth…
love &light to all…..
I have been doing Reiki since 2009. I had quite alot of clients then. Then in 2013 i met a french lady who thought me about Ego. One day while in her meditation class i saw an image of a witch. After the meditation i discussed this with her and she got all defensive since then i never went back to her but my clientele has dropped severely. I am nursing as well and do advanced wound healing. When i do wounds i can feel energy flowing, and i do get a salary does this qualify for not giving reiki for free. And can you help me in case i have a bad atachement and how to remove it. I have broken all ties and cords with lady but a lot of bad things happend to me and my family afterwards.
Ki, Chi, Prana, Vril, or what ever you want to call it; Is a GIFT; given free of Charge by the Masters of Creation; Father Truth & Mother Wisdom. WE are merely conduits. The energy flows THRU us, & as we allow, so we also receive. THAT is the exchange. If those who receive wish to give you something for your time, then that is their prerogative, & their Gift…but saying that it is mandatory is Spitting in the face of our creators, who maintain the universe & charge nothing.
Well said Russ, I’m same opinion.energy is free and your time thats may cost them, but sometimes even thank you is enough.
Totally agree! Dr, Usui did not set the rule, it was Tadaka; she also priced master training at USD10,000.
I wonder how the Master Jesus would consider your arguments re: paying and “permission” one would think that since we are merely conduits and not Gods, that the Universe chooses who gets what, when we make the request. You may need to lighten up on the ego just a tad. I show my gratitude for my gifts by freely sharing them with anyone and everyone, realizing, of course, that the Universe, and not I, controls any and all outcomes…….Peace, Light & Love
Well, the ‘rules’ are to be mindful of but i believe it is important to also review the circumstances.
An exchange does not always mean money. Currently, my other job provides me with all that I need to live.
When I send out healing, right how, I don’t charge because the exchange is me getting comfortable with listening to the messages.
I find people get really hung up on this particular rule.
Next, you’re right. You cannot force healing on anyone. So when I send out healing, it is always with the belief that it will happen only as it serves their highest purpose. (I am not privy to another person’s life purpose). And then, they may not accept right away, so I leave them with a ball of healing that their higher self can tap into when accepted and needed.
I this way,I can then also fulfill the last rule. Not to become attached to the outcome. We cannot force anyone to heal no matter how much we know will work.
But,maybe consider, if you do become attached to the outcome, maybe that is the Universs’s way of pointing out what you yourself need to reflect on.

I absolutely agree with point 2 and 3.
There is a difference between giving someone Reiki without monetary gain and giving people Reiki without permission. I used to be very poor and I needed help. It was kind energy healers who helped me without monetary gain and who pointed me to options to further help me help myself. I was immensely grateful. As I learned how to do energy healing I was able to do exchanges, etc.
Giving someone money does not equal gratitude. If it did we would all be more grateful to our mechanics instead of complaining that it’s taking so long to fix the car. Ya know?
The issue is when you risk burning yourself out doing volunteer energy healing. Or when you deal with people who refuse to do anything to help themselves but are always hanging on you.
By alway refusing to do healing work for free you miss out on the times when the universe guides your to do so. You’re not open to it and so you miss out on the blessings of helping people in need.
I take no issue with people getting paid for the work they do. I have given services for free and I have been paid for my services. It’s the assumption that people without money can’t give back in some other way that I take issue with.
These are not the main reiki principles, please share the real principles and explain these are perhaps YOUR top reiki concerns but Mikao listed other 5 principles NOT these. although these are present. Please be careful u are responsible for misinformation u spread. I was taught to beam reiki, and like reiki rays consistently reports, the force here is divine, i am just a conduit. If so, your first two points are not universal and are falsely presented here, at a minimum not accurately representing Mikao Usui. Please fix it or shame on you!
Hiiii Robin,
I know you are talking about the 5 principles
Just for today……
All I am talking about is the ethics 🙂

Thank You ~ Thank You ~ Thank You for This Article!! .. I had saved this for future reading. I happened to be guided to click on & read in its entirety a moment ago. And ‘In Perfect Timing’ ~ of course 😉 .. While I am Quite Aware & RespectfuL of Energies & Free WiLL, It is ALways a Positive Thing to Read / Be Reminded of EVERYTHING in This Article.. And while, I have been respectful of Others, I have not been as respectfuL and attentive to my own as I had thought I was ~ In that, I had been troubled re a melee of things presently. ALas, As Much Love & Gratitude That I Project, I realized that I connected a specific outcome!! (Something which I know better than to do 😇)
~ How Simply Self-Misdirected~ Ahhhhh!! The Wonderment 😊 ..
Thank You ~ Thank You ~ Thank You 💖💖💖💖
Hi, Great points here, I have always ended each and all of my Reiki sessions with, ‘and to all who need it at this time, be it for their highest good, with profound gratitude.’ I have never claimed to specifics, for the highest good, that’s it and that’s all. We are simply the fawcett and hose. turn it on and direct it.
Highest blessings to all <3
Reiki flows thru us to heal the person receiving the treatment. Every single time we give a Reiki treatment we also recieve one. That is our payment for doing the healing work.
Money is simply a solid form of energy. It takes a certain amount of expended energy for a person to earn a dollar, five dollars, twenty dollars, a hundred dollars. Money is a physical representation of that energy expenditure.
There must be an energy exchange for a healing to take place. The person receiving must give up their sick energy, their negative diseased energy in order for the healthy Reiki energy to be able to flow into them and take the place of that bad energy.
If we take money in exchange for the healing, we prevent our client from being able to pay the full cost….they cannot give up 100% of the diseased energy in order to recieve 100% of the healthy Reiki. Because of our misunderstanding of the energy exchange.
The exchange of energy is not money for Reiki. It never was. The energy exchange is all the sick energy given up for the Reiki.
This is why clients have to come back for treatments several times, instead of being healed completely in one session. Even the story of Usui and the beggars shows the lie of taking money for healing. He healed the leper’s completely…….no money exchanged hands. He gave the Reiki away freely and the leper’s gave up their leprosy. It worked. Because that’s the actual exhange.
His mistake was not also healing the leper’s self esteem, their sense of self worth, so they would see they could learn a trade and find a different way to earn a living. He took NO money and healed the leper’s bodies completely.
I have never charged for Reiki in over 25 years since becoming a master. I have had too many “miraculous” healings in that time to count. A man who suffered 11 strokes over 7 years and was partially paralyzed on the left side of his body regained full movement after one two hour healing session. A woman who had gone blind 6 years prior regained her sight after a single one hour session. I myself suffered a cut that exposed the bone in my arm. I calmly covered the wound and sent Reiki as my friend took me to the hospital. When we arrived all that was left was a bright pink scar.
I look at that scar everyday as a reminder that we should never charge for Reiki. Charging money takes away a clients ability to give up 100% of the sick energy to recieve 100% of the Reiki energy needed to be healed.
Hi, Sunetra. I read your article and I agree with you fully. We become compassionate to the extent that we stop thinking of the ethics. Every time it backfires. I also learnt from my experiences . Yes I agree we need to respect the free will of the person as well as the divine healing energy. By giving free and without asking we are disrespectful for the divine energy, the person and also ourselves. But all this is learnt from the experience and mistakes. No master can teach from his experience . Life is a great master. Divine also teaches us through our experience. I am very great full to the divine for the way it teaches. Thanks a lot for the article. I love this as it spoke my own words.
Thank you! HSZSN!
Humans (and whatever/whoever else) must unlearn ALL limitations and man-made, self-sabotaging laws/rules which our infinite Divine Spiritual Creator/Source would never be ok with.
And, Btw, we are Goddesses and Gods too.
I had a recent conversation -I have been level 2 for 8 years and I spoke to a master teacher that did an 18 month immersion and she stated that she was limiting the flow when she treated because she didn’t want to ‘dump’ the flow, so like a spigot she keeps the flow low so as to not traumatize people. But when she treated me she said she could feel like tentacles coming from me to almost suck up more energy, and she cut them away? Why would she do this? I have always practiced with being the straw, it running through me, what they get is what is needed for their highest good.
Thank you for the reminder of our first lessons. Definitely sine thing we need to keep in sight all the time
