Crisis or Satori? The Path to Enlightenment

Articles· Self Practice

20 Nov 2020

Have you ever had a bad night’s sleep? The next day you wake up and feel asleep, a little silly, you can’t think things through clearly. When you’re this asleep you don’t make clear-cut decisions and you can have some accidents, like spilling your breakfast or falling down the stairs when you’re coming down, just because you’re asleep.

If you have felt this way, you probably share with me that a good solution to wake you up is to take a refreshing shower. As the water falls on you, this state of numbness that you feel in your body and mind is gradually extinguished. And you regain your lucidity, control your movements better, and can make good decisions.

The same thing happens with our consciousness, with our understanding of the nature of everything around us. And I don’t mean an understanding of having studied the physical and chemical properties of what surrounds us, but a spiritual understanding that is felt, that is incorporated within you, then you feel your environment as if it were part of you and you feel at peace.

Enlightenment as a consequence of a crisis

This awakening of consciousness, which we can call enlightenment, can come after a crisis. If we go back to our analogy of being a little asleep, imagine that while you are eating a little bit of breakfast, you spill your hot infusion on yourself, you burn yourself and you wet your clothes. This little crisis produces a release of adrenaline in your body and you react quickly and suddenly you are completely awake. But it doesn’t feel like a very peaceful awakening, does it?

The word crisis comes from the Greek “krinein” and means “to divide, to split, to separate”. In this way, Crisis refers to the act of a cut with something previous. It is in this sense that a crisis gives us awareness of a separation between a previous state and the current state. This awareness, which can be more or less profound, is the trigger for transformation.

Every crisis is an opportunity to begin a new path. And while we can take advantage of crises and find the opportunities that arise from them, crises should not be necessary. We could reach the same opportunities without having to face a crisis. However, the changes that lead to enlightenment require an energetic impulse to break the inertia of the resting state in search of the movement that will lead us to enlightenment. When we need this change, but we are not giving all that effort, when we do not want to face the change that is imminent, a crisis is a fundamental trigger for transformation.

We could interpret that it was a crisis that led Mikao Usui to make a 21-day retreat on Mount Kurama in search of enlightenment, where he received the information about Reiki.

The Enlightenment by Satori

The enlightenment and understanding of life and nature as it is can be reached after a crisis or a hard work of many years, often with many difficulties and suffering in the learning or it can be reached by Satori: a moment full of joy and complete inspiration.

Satori is that instant in which the channels of comprehension are opened and the enlightenment flows towards all the aspects of the being.

In life, we can reach naturally moments of enlightenment, that bring us closer fully and in harmony to a perfect answer to our problems. A historical example of this type of enlightenment is what happened to Archimedes when an instant of enlightenment gave him the answer to propose the well-known Archimedes Principle of hydrostatic. Similar moments can be experienced in the everydayness of our lives, which offer us a full understanding of certain aspects of our lives.

Crisis or Satori? The Path to Enlightenment

Satori is a Japanese term, used to refer to the states of enlightenment of Gautama Buddha and the patriarchs of Buddhism, to describe enlightenment in Zen Buddhism. This term literally translates as “understanding” and is used to describe a moment of total presence.

This could be defined as the moment when it is fully understood:

  • Existence beyond earthly experience and requires high levels of consciousness,
  • That only the present exists (where the past and the future are born), creating and dissolving in the same instant.

In the state of Satori one manages to perceive nature, the time, the absence of separation between all that exists. But this is not enough, it is necessary to deepen the experience, to repeat it over and over again, until bringing it to maturity to become a permanent state.

When a person experiences Satori he has eliminated the mental conflict and allows him to clarify his understanding of the meaning of life and to restructure her/himself to live fully, enjoying all the experiences, just for the fact of experiencing them. This person will continue to live, work, eat, experience happiness and suffering and the Satori state will allow him/her to treasure each of those experiences, even when they involve pain.

Satori Attunements

There is a set of techniques and practices called Satori Attunements that take you to a suitable energetic state to experience the true nature. These attunements are like a refreshing shower to awaken consciousness.

The Satori Attunements as well as Reiki uses the vital universal energy, both enhance and complement each other. In its process, the Satori Attunements amplify the series of attunements and symbols received in the classes of Reiki and together with new techniques, that combine concentration, the consciousness of the body and breathing, opens powerful channels through which the intelligent and healing vital energy flows for the achievement of our own well-being and one of the others.

However, with Satori Attunements we seek sustained enlightenment in time that becomes a full understanding of all aspects of being. That is why it must be followed by additional practice to achieve a natural, effortless state of being.

What do we get from the Satori Attunements?

Satori Attunements helps us to experience life in a fuller way and, through a process of personal growth, makes us participants of the abundance in every sense: it develops in us happiness without a particular reason, health in an integral way, and unconditional love.

It allows those who receive it to notably modify their emotional state, helps to heal the body and open the heart to express love and thus enjoy true relationships. It removes barriers and creates fraternal bonds between people.

It amplifies the conscience, develops intelligence, revitalizes the energy helping to heal the body, the mind, and the relationships. It generates a state of openness to observe and understand the needs of other people, to give love and affection to all beings, and also to receive it is a touch of love and care.

If you could choose what your next transformation would be like, what would you choose? Crisis or Satori?
