Many pets suffer from anxiety, especially with loud noises, such as fireworks, construction, or thunderstorms, as well as during separation from their loved ones. If your pet is frightened during these situations, you can help them to feel more at peace with Reiki and a type of energy medicine called flower essences.
Flower essences are very different from essential oils. They have no scent and contain no plant or herbal extracts. Instead, they are the vibrational energy of the plant—the life force—which has been imprinted on water, then preserved so that it can be used in healing. You could think of flower essences as energy medicine from plants. It is a little like being able to bottle that lovely, comforted, uplifted feeling we have when we are around beautiful plants and flowers.
Since there are no plant or herbal extracts in flower essences, they are ideal for use with animals. There is no risk for allergic reactions or side effects or for interactions with any medications that your pet may be taking. And since flower essences are also a form of energy healing, they are a perfect match for using along with Reiki! Animals are amazingly receptive to both Reiki and flower essences.
There are many different types of flower essences, made from all sorts of plants and flowers. I recommend that you use Rescue Remedy for anxious animals. It is very easy to find and works extremely well for animals. Most natural foods stores carry it, and many grocery and drug stores do as well.
The simplest thing to do is to buy the pet or child version of Rescue Remedy, which is preserved in vegetable glycerin, instead of alcohol. If you’d like an easy alternative, that will save you money in the long term, buy regular Rescue Remedy and make a treatment bottle for your pet, using 4 drops of Rescue Remedy, 1/2 teaspoon of vegetable glycerin, and distilled water, mixed together in a blue or brown dropper bottle.
You can use it in several ways:
- Put up to 10 drops of the blend in a spray bottle with distilled water, plus a teaspoon of vodka or brandy to preserve it. Spritz it on the pet’s bedding and around the home.
- Put about 4 drops on your hands and stroke down their backs. This is especially during and right before a frightening noise, a vet visit, or any other upsetting situation.
- Place 4 drops daily in their water dish.
- Place 4 drops on a treat or in their food.
I love to use Rescue Remedy and other flower essences along with animal energy healing sessions! If you do energy healing with your pet or other animals, you can easily do this as well. Simply place about 4 drops of Rescue Remedy on your hands prior to the session, rub your hands together, then rub your palms over your heart, your face, and your belly.
After that, I like to sit quietly for a few minutes and do a short self-treatment and meditate. This is really important to do prior to starting an animal Reiki session. Animals are so sensitive to our energy and our emotional states, so we need to tend to ourselves before we work with them. This is especially true when working with anxious animals. When we connect with an animal, we want to be able to do that from our hearts, without a distracted and cluttered mind.
It can be especially difficult to work with our own pets when they are upset or in pain, whether that pain is physical or emotional. I encourage you to seek the support of another energy healer for your pet, if you find it difficult to remain calm and neutral when you connect with your pet to do a session. We all need outside support for ourselves and our families now and then! There are quite a few animal energy healers available these days, so take a look online. Keep in mind that distant healing is often received by animals even better than in-person healing.
I hope these tips are helpful for you and your anxious pet or pet clients!

Thanks, Angie! I really enjoyed this article – I use Rescue Remedy (and Reiki) for my anxious chihuahua – it definitely helps. And I agree that distant healing is great for animals – I conduct all my animal sessions via distance and it’s amazingly effective and stress-free for all involved. Thanks again for all you do!
Nhas anybody tried changing plant energy in a pet session?
Do you meaning channeling plant energy in a session with a pet? If so, yes! I have done a flower essence reading on myself, other guests and my pets. Whenever I find out which essence they want, I always ask if this is something that can be channeled today or if they need the physical remedy. I have only had to use the physical essence a few times, like literally no more than 3 times. It is really amazing.
