Have you ever experienced your heart leaping for joy? Do you remember a time when a teacher, or a spiritual leader, made a comment that totally resonated with you? Have you ever felt so proud of someone it seemed your heart swelled with love? Have you felt the painful heart, when you thought it would be impossible to hurt any more?
All of us experience these strong moments when it feels our hearts could explode with joy or die from pain. It is easy to hear our hearts during those times. What can be more difficult is to become aware of the less momentous times – the times when there are mild stirrings within our hearts. These are easier to dismiss, or ignore, altogether.
Yet, those times can be significant as these quieter stirrings can give us much guidance in our lives. Carol had her radio on an oldies’ music station while she was driving to work. When the Beatles’ song, Imagine, was played, her heart reacted to the line, “Imagine all the people living for today.” But, she arrived at work and soon forgot about her heart’s stirring.
During yoga class, Joseph noticed how the calm atmosphere affected his heart. He felt his heartbeat become slower and slower, until a new rhythm was created. He has some appreciation of the physical impact of yoga, but he has not tuned into the emotional and spiritual aspects of his practice. In fact, he wonders if he should be doing something more physically challenging, such as running or strenuous bike-riding.
While Jill was reading a historical novel, one line in the book seemed to jump off the page. Her heart started to beat wildly. The main character was starving, during a terrible famine. What could it mean?
There is a purpose to those stirrings, and we can learn how to find the purpose of our heart reactions. Certainly, emotional awareness is essential if we want to grow into our full potential as living human beings. It is often necessary to make an effort by taking the time and expending the energy to explore why our hearts have the reactions they do.
The practice of Reiki can definitely assist us in enhancing our awareness to these happenings. Reiki enables us to become more open and accepting of what we think and what we feel. With intention, we can learn to listen to our hearts.
After Carol’s busy day at work, she came home and spent fifteen minutes in Reiki self-treatment. The memory of her reaction to the song Imagine came back to her. She knew it was important for her to explore it and spent some time journaling on this song. Soon, she realized that her heart’s desire is to live in the present moment, rather than spending precious time and energy worrying about the future. This is just one example of how Reiki can propel us to greater understanding – and healing.
Joe decided to spend more time running, ignoring the messages from his heart. Jill thought about the passage in the book more and more, but she could not find an answer. She wrote down the question, “What about this passage is bothering me?” She put the piece of paper in her hands and sent Reiki to it. Soon, she made the connection with her belief that she has much “lack” in her life, although her life is comfortable. Reading about a terrible famine helped her to realize how much she wants to change this false belief. She decided to express gratitude for the many blessings in her life. She now approaches Reiki, and all the abundance in her life, with great appreciation.
Each one of us can grow in the ability to listen to our hearts’ stirrings. And, Reiki can certainly help us in this quest.
