Humility is a word that seems to have almost disappeared in today’s world – although it is a quality that many of us were taught during our childhood years. We were taught it is inappropriate to be boastful, too proud, or arrogant. If we made a statement indicating we thought we were better than someone else, we were quickly corrected.
Humility, however, has deeper meanings than being respectful or treating all people equally to others – although these are essential practices for all spiritual seekers. It is an attitude we can develop and embrace, and eventually it becomes an integrated part of our belief systems and our thoughts. It becomes a part of another vitally essential attitude – gratitude. Humility and gratitude work hand-in-hand: as we realize that every blessing is from the Divine, and not of our own making; feeling grateful is the natural reaction.
Humility is not egocentric, but rather it is based in the truth that everything I am is a gift from the Divine. I did not make my body, my mind or my spirit. These aspects of myself were created by the Divine, to be used according to my soul’s purpose.
In the same way, Reiki is a very special gift from the Divine, to be used for the purpose of bringing Universal Life Force energies to the earth. It is a very humbling experience to work with this most powerful healing energy, knowing we are merely instruments in another person’s healing path. And, we are very grateful for how this healing method came into our lives – we see all the people, books, websites and other tools Spirit used to invite us into this blessed community of Reiki practitioners.

It is vitally important that we remain humble whenever we think or speak of Reiki. We cannot let our egocentric selves become a part of our attitudes and our practice. There is one place where we need to use our ego selves. That place is using our cognitive minds to create an atmosphere of love and acceptance towards everyone who asks about Reiki, and everyone who agrees to receive Reiki from us. It is good to create a relaxing space, to give information about Reiki, to “get the word out” about Reiki.
If we ever have thoughts that somehow our Reiki power is due to our own special qualities, or we think we are better practitioners than another people, we have sorely misunderstood the true Source of Reiki. We are facilitators of bringing this Healing Energy to people who will benefit from it. Remaining a clear channel – this means, clearing your practice space, clearing your thought-filled mind, setting an intention – is an ego function. Acknowledging the true Source of this healing work is an act of humility.
