A few months ago, a Reiki client came in for her second session. She told me she had almost canceled the session, as she had an upset stomach for several hours after the first one. We discussed the reasons this may have occurred. She reported when she thinks about her job, she often gets an upset stomach. We discussed her situation, while I did Reiki. What she soon discovered is that she feels a sea of emotions around her place of employment. Her supervisor instructs her to do things that are on the edge of being unethical. In order to stay with this company, she “stuffed down” these feelings, so she could function. Feeling compromised in this way was very distressing for her. There were many emotions associated with her supervisor, the company and how it operated. The client was not living in a place of integrity, and it disturbed her greatly.
This client continued to use Reiki, and supportive friends, to reach a solution. She found a new position, and upset tummies are a thing of the past. If this client had continued to work for this company, she could have gone down a path of increasingly harmful effects of mind, body and spirit energies.
One of the healing aspects of Reiki is to bring strong emotions, that have been “stuffed down”, to the surface. This is often called a healing crisis. These crises can take many forms: there can be aches and pains, nausea and vomiting, fatigue, crying outbursts, irritability, the list goes on. Initially, these symptoms may feel quite uncomfortable to the client.
“Symptom” is the right word to use in these cases. A symptom is a result of an underlying issue; it is not the problem, but rather a sign that something else is going on. For example, a symptom of an infection may be a high temperature. Taking a pill to lower the fever only may address the symptom, but not the underlying problem of the infection.
In the same way, emotions that have arisen to the surface are often the symptom that some issue remains unresolved. The healing energies of Reiki will assist in bringing these emotions to the surface so that the cause can be identified and addressed. Sometimes, the problem may have occurred in the past, such as abuse, a loved one’s death, or loss of a job or relationship. Other times, the problem is current and troubling, but the client has not yet dealt with it. Sometimes, it is both! For example, low self-esteem may be a product of much childhood criticism, yet it is causing present-day difficulties.
Reiki always propels us to a path of healing, one step, one day at a time. We can become too comfortable with issues that we carry around with us, and not make the effort to become better. Living in a space of loving wholeness and acceptance eludes us; sometimes, we simply do not know where to begin. If you feel “less than whole” and cannot identify the reasons why just set the intention for healing. Reiki will guide you along your path – and there may be some uncomfortable times, but that is what you need at that moment. The wisdom of the Universal Life Force is always full of love. Your full potential, your highest good, will be achieved.
