When we repeat phrases or actions over and over again, these become natural and automatic to us. Learning to walk, type or drive a car seemed difficult at first. We had to purposefully think of every part of the process and do it, step by step. After many repetitions, we no longer had to name and think about each step. These processes became a part of our everyday lives.
Learning the symbols of Reiki requires a similar process. I certainly remember the day when my Reiki Master presented the three Level II symbols to us. These symbols seemed difficult. I had to review them over and over the first few weeks to remember how to draw them, learn the foreign words and pronounce the symbols’ names properly. I referred to my study sheet many times.
Many religions have a body of prayers, or rituals, that also require a fair amount of memorization. Some people, especially adult converts to the religion, can initially feel overwhelmed by this task. Yet, over time, these practices can become second-nature to a person. Repeating familiar prayers can bring solace to a weary or anxious soul.
Repetitious activities are always a part of our lives. Is learning the Reiki symbols similar to learning other information? Or, is there something greater happening?
My contention is that something greater is happening! We can try to explain the attunement process, but the reality is that there is sacred mystery within it. More is happening than what makes rational, logical sense. Becoming attuned to the symbols brings new Universal Life Force energies into the recipients’ whole mind/body/spiritual being. A transformation has occurred, whether we feel it immediately, or not. Like some religious, or cultural practices, there is a belief that an initiation has transpired. The person has experienced a major shift, and her life is forever changed.
Just like the positive effects of prayer, we have to continue to work with Reiki energies. People who pray believe once is not enough. There is power in intention – and repetition. Taking time out of our busy, earthly lives frequently to connect with the Divine is essential. We often allow the tasks of daily living to pull us away from sacred connections. We have to purposefully set aside time to be with the Divine. Because of repeated practice, the Reiki symbols can transport us quickly from the busy-ness to the serene.
Then, we can reach for the next level of understanding – that the Divine is always present. With frequent Reiki practice, we begin to realize that everything in our lives is infused with the Divine. We realize energy exists everywhere, even some of the seemingly mundane aspects of our lives. When our awareness grows, often through the sacred practices of Reiki and prayer, our lives become blessed with this knowledge.
One of the many blessings of Reiki is that we are continually being taught fundamental Truths. Let us always express gratitude for this sacred gift in our lives!
