People often wonder if Reiki can cure life threatening illnesses or even illnesses that are of a less severe nature. Many believe that it is some kind of a magic pill that one just swallows and then miraculously recovers from seemingly hopeless maladies.
To clarify, this notion of Reiki being a magic pill is one among the popular myths of Reiki.
From a holistic standpoint, illness is viewed as something that happens across various levels of being. The physical level or the body is where it shows up to make itself obvious. And the first line of treatment usually targets healing at this level as that is where it is most obvious and causes visible damage. But, illness often has its roots in other states of being such as the mental, emotional and spiritual levels.
The presence of illness at the non-physical states of being is not obviously visible as it is subtle and hard to detect, unlike at the physical level.
When the body is functioning at an optimal state, it is one of the most perfect healers that one can ever have. It heals illnesses and problems effortlessly. When you look at young children who are generally healthy, you realise the truth in this. Children recover quickly from all kinds of illnesses, while adults take a lot longer. And the older one is, the longer it can take to recover even from seemingly simple infections, injuries, and illnesses.
Most of us never question as to why this should be so. We just assume that it is part of the aging process and dismiss it.
However, in truth, it is the life force that loses its effectiveness to work at an optimal level. This causes us to heal slower than children do. The life force or Ki is that energy that keeps one alive and is also in charge of healing the body. It is the fuel that runs the body. With the passage of time, we accumulate so much of clutter in our physical, mental and emotional bodies, that the flow of the life force is disrupted. As a result, the healing mechanism of the body gradually breaks down and we can no longer heal ourselves as effortlessly as children can.
When we practise Reiki, we channel divinely guided life force energy through ourselves. This energy gradually clears our body of toxins and imbalances. As the body is cleaned and cleared, the flow of the life force in the body improves. This results in an enhanced state of health and well being. When one is in an enhanced state of well being, the body is naturally able to heal itself.
This makes it clear that the primary function of Reiki is to enhance the body’s innate ability to heal itself. It is not like a pill that one just swallows to make the symptoms of an illness disappear overnight. Reiki starts healing at a much deeper level. It starts healing at the root cause of illness – which is almost always a disruption in the flow of the life force energy.
Hence, Reiki cannot be looked at as a substitute for medical care in the case of emergencies nor as a miracle cure for illnesses. It must be viewed and understood in the proper light in order to reap maximum benefit from its healing effects.
The body is a natural healer. It can heal itself when it is in good shape and well nurtured.
Reiki assists the body in doing something that it is naturally meant to do – HEAL ITSELF!
