Body Image Affirmations

Article by Justine Melton

Body image is something that is hard to master and is something that a lot of people struggle with. Like many people I had my own body image issues growing up. I grew up in a beach community where everyone sought to have the perfect body. I had family members who were always dieting and were always comparing themselves to others. I can remember as a little girl walking through the mall with a specific family member who would point out to me how much better I looked than some people and how they were better than me in other ways. I can still remember hearing, “Look at her! That girl over there with the big thighs. How sad she doesn’t work out! She is a child and her thighs are touching! See why we make you work out? Look at how much prettier your hair is than hers? I bet she is jealous of you. If you keep running at the boardwalk all summer everyone in here will be jealous of you!” I grew up listening to all kinds of comments like this. This well-intentioned relative thought they were motivating me to always work on myself but instead they were helping to create body image issues for me.

I have been as thin as a skeleton and I have been overweight. I have worked very hard on myself and all body image issues. I can say without a doubt that Reiki and affirmations paired together played the biggest role in overcoming my body image issues and negative self-talk.

I like writing affirmations. For me, it comes pretty easily. I have had a lot of people contact me asking how to write affirmations and how to combine them with Reiki. It really is a simple process and can have amazing results with whatever issue you are working on.

To write your own affirmations sit in a calm quiet space. Make a list of the negative things you are telling yourself or whatever issue is bothering you. Next, simply replace it with a positive sentence that is the opposite of what negative thing you are feeling. That positive sentence is your affirmation. For example, if you are feeling like you are hating your body you could write an affirmation that says, “I love every inch of my body. I am perfect and loved just the way I am.” The possibilities for what you write are endless. Make sure it matches what you want to feel.

Here are some examples of some affirmations for positive body image:

I love myself.
My body is deserving of love.
I am perfect just the way I am.
I love every inch of myself.
I choose to eat healthy food every day that make me healthy and make me feel good about myself.
People love me for who I am.
I am amazing on the inside and out.
I love myself and give myself the gift of healthy movement every day.
Life loves me.
Other people find me attractive on the inside and out.
Weight falls off me effortlessly as I move my body.
I gain weight in a healthy way as I nourish my mind, body, and soul.
Exercise is fun for me.
I accept my body exactly the way it is.
I am confident in my body.
I am worthy.
I am valued.

In order to combine affirmations with Reiki simply write your affirmations down on a piece of paper, make a large Cho Ku Rei over the middle of the paper, and then beam Reiki to the paper filled with your affirmation. When you go through the list spend an entire minute or two on each affirmation. Read the affirmation to yourself and then allow yourself to feel the feeling of the affirmation being true for at least a min before moving on to the next affirmation.

It is up to you how often you go through your affirmation list. Once a day is a great way to get started. I like to recommend doing it when you wake up or when you go to sleep. Also, whenever you notice yourself having negative thoughts throughout the day send the thought to a pretend trash can and immediately say a positive affirmation in its place. It may seem silly at first but this is how you retrain your mind to think in a positive way.

Affirmations and Reiki truly improved and healed my own body image issues. I hope you give it a try as well and see how much Reiki and affirmations may help you.
