Grace is a word I grew up with, and it is a word that has become less familiar to many people. Grace referred to the unexplainable, miraculous times in life – times when you felt a peacefulness within your heart, when everything around you seemed chaotic. You felt blessed.
Although the word grace has become less familiar, it seems the feeling of peacefulness may be easier to attain. Spending time in prayer and going to church on Sunday were common practices. Now, in addition to these practices, many people find peace within the practice of yoga and meditation. And, the growing popularity of Reiki and other healing modalities aid us in finding this calmness in our busy, everyday lives. The connection between mind, body and spiritual aspects of ourselves is recognized, and understood. In many ways, we live in an enlightened time.
However, as practices become more familiar to us, sometimes it is easy to forget the specialness and blessings accompanying these gifts. We can take them for granted, and we can place expectations on the outcomes of our spiritual practices.
Amazing grace does not mean that everything we desire will automatically happen. It does not mean we will no longer face hardships or avoid all of life’s challenges. It does not mean no illness, tragedy, or suffering will come into our lives. It does not mean we will live forever; our physical bodies will leave the earth someday.
It is the other way around! It means when we struggle, when we grieve, and when we doubt our faith, amazing grace can come into our lives in that very moment. Our faith in the Divine Spirit will fill us with trust as we embrace the concept “all is well,” even when it seems like our lives are falling apart. We will know, somehow, some way, this time is necessary for us to strengthen our resolve to live a life of peace and love.
Amazing grace often comes in the form of forgiveness – whether it is forgiveness to another person, or forgiveness for ourselves. Forgiveness is a spiritual act, and in some ways, it does not make sense in a materialistic world. But, it makes perfect spiritual sense! The act opens our hearts to a new reality; we can grow in compassion and love.
Many people seek Reiki as a way to cure a disease, or fix an ache or pain. Certainly, Reiki energies have no limitations and curing a disease may occur, if it is for the highest good of the client. Reiki always brings healing, and that is the amazing gift of Reiki. Sometimes, it comes in the form of a cure. Other times, it comes in the form of a growing awareness of why we chose to have the disease be a part of our lives. Other times, it is the act of acceptance, knowing it is for the good of our spiritual growth.
Let us never forget to see the miracles in our lives. While these miracles may not be realized in our physical bodies, the miracles are available to us every time we connect to Spirit. That is Amazing Grace!
