Throughout my years studying Reiki, I learned only one way of holding my hands during a treatment: gently cupped palms with relaxed fingers, gently curved, as if you’re paddling through water.
Once I completed master level Reiki, I decided that I should experiment with techniques as I felt called to. For example, I don’t necessarily follow a specific order of hand placement during a session; I may move from one end of the body to the other, put my hands on two areas simultaneously, or revisit areas that I sense need more help after the first pass.
The technique I’m sharing here was inspired by my desire to channel the healing energy even more directly, powerfully, and surgically, if you will. By holding my fingers in a pinched way (shown in the image below) and applying them in this formation to the area in need of deeper level healing, I’ve experienced a remarkable difference.

I align my fingers and thumb so that when I view the tips, they form the shape of a cross: index finger at the top, thumb and middle finger are the crossbar, and ring finger and pinky follow below to form the base of the cross.
I then apply the finger formation to the area, just as I would with traditional curved palms. I try to center my fingertips and visualize the Reiki gently drilling to the place in need of healing.
I invite you to try it on yourself: My favorite way to use it is while processing difficult emotions. My thymus can get so tight and feel quite blocked during those times, so to increase flow to the area and facilitate release, I hold my pinched fingers directly on my thymus (between the heart and throat chakras). As I breathe and allow the Reiki to ‘drill’ in, I can instantly feel the area start to relax and allow a feeling of flow to return. The tightness eases, and I’m able to move through the emotions more comfortably and with a feeling of ease.
I also have found that for some, it can be too powerful and may feel uncomfortable to use. For this reason, I only use it when I feel called to, and not as a first form of treatment. As with all clients, I invite feedback during the session, so if someone indicates it’s too much, I move back to the traditional hand position. I hope this helps you in your practice, and if you have questions or feedback, I invite you to get in touch!
