Self-care for a Reiki practitioner is as important as caring for your clients. After all, we are the conduits of Life Force Energy (LFE). And, let’s face it, no one wants to carry around other people’s bad juju. Self-care is something a Reiki practitioner should take very seriously. It is just as important to cleanse your treatment space before and after a session. So let’s dive into what ways we can provide ourselves with self-care and also keep our treatment space flowing with high vibes only!
Before a Session
Grounding is one of the best ways to clear your energy for the day. Grounding is just what the name implies. Through this practice, you become connected to Mother Earth. You ground your live-wire energy. This is a short meditative practice that can be done for 10 or 15 minutes before you begin your healing sessions for the day. I like to light a couple of candles (sometimes in the form of a pyramid around my grounding space), burn incense (my favorite being Nag Champa), and grab a stick of Palo Santo to clear my own chakras. Whatever your grounding practice, make sure to bring in as many Earth elements as you can. As a Reiki Master/Teacher, I use the Dai Ko Myo grounding exercise to connect myself to the LFE, Mother Earth, and my divine presence and purpose on Earth.
During a Session
During a session, I will use certain essential oils to keep me centered in that healing space and to keep my own chakras flowing so that the LFE can flow from my own hand chakras through my Third Eye and Crown chakras into the ether. I will also burn a stick of Palo Santo to clear the chakras in my hands once I have completed the Byosen scanning on both sides of the body. I like to think that I am burning off any of the stagnant energy that may remain from sweeping and clearing the chakras of my clients.
After a Session
Once I have sealed a protective layer around my client, I will step away from them. With my feet planted firmly on the ground, I imagine a shower of white light that flows down from the top of my head throughout my body to my feet in the form of raindrops. Holding this intention and mental vision assists in cleansing my energy centers and body of all energies received from the client I have just treated.
Once I have refreshed the physical body with clean energy, I conduct the zipper technique. Zipping from the bottom up, then from the top down, and finally one more zip from the bottom up closing up my energy field.
I then rub my hands together and direct the energy of my hands into the nearest trash can (I keep one in my treatment room for this purpose).
Re-grounding & Saging
After I have bid my client farewell, I like to re-ground before my next client. But before I do that, I will sage my healing space. Sage is a wonderful tool to use to cleanse the air of stagnant energies and an added plus is that it also kills bacteria in the air.
Cleansing Crystals
If you use crystals in your Reiki practice, it is important to cleans your crystals between healing sessions. While not all crystals can be cleansed in the same way, the ones I use in my sessions can all be cleansed in fresh water with sea salt. I let them sit in the sea salt water for a few minutes then rinse them and dry them. I place them back on my crystal grid, ready for the next session.
So that’s it my lovely practitioners, some practical advice that can easily be used in your daily healing sessions.
Wishing you a day full of Love and Light!

As a Reiki practitioner do you recommend zipping up your chakras before conducting a Reiki treatment on a client to protect your energy? Or do you think this would hinder you during the session. I zip myself up before giving a massage but I wasn’t sure if this would block the energy during a Reiki treatment. Thanks!
