Do Your Life Review – Now
One of the greatest gifts of working with hospice patients is facilitating a life review discussion. This is a process where the social worker asks questions about the patient’s life, and if the patient is willing to participate in this endeavor, the results can be amazing. By telling stories from his or her life, the patient often achieves important goals, often without realizing these goals even existed. This can be as simple as talking about raising children or caring for a mother in her last days. Or, it can be as vitally important as dealing with memories of killing enemy troops in a war, or expressing a desire to heal a relationship with an estranged relative. Frequently, it is assigning meaning to the major, and seemingly small, events of a lifetime. It is finding peace within one’s heart during the last days on earth.
When we find meaning within our daily lives, there is a satisfying richness. We find significance in the day-in and day-out activities of our hectic schedules. We name the purpose of why we do the things we do! This richness can be attained now; we should not wait until the end of our lives.
Reiki is a tool that we can use, with this intention. We can set a specific intention, such as, “Spirit, please help me to see the purpose of this situation.” Reiki enables us to “step out” of our daily activities, into a place of relaxation and calmness, and we are able to develop a more objective perspective.
Additionally, we grow in awareness of the various aspects of our beings. Let’s examine the case of a person who was cured from a potentially terminal disease. The physical body was healed, but there may be emotional and spiritual aspects that remain hidden. The soul’s purpose for this event may have existed to give this person the opportunity to learn spiritual lessons of not being in control, or the importance of communicating with the Divine Spirit through meditation or prayer. Because the source of Reiki is Universal Life Force energies, the connection to the spiritual aspects of ourselves is greatly strengthened.
In this case, there were many emotional aspects, such as great anxiety and fear. Reiki will assist in the healing of these emotions, as it flows to the root of the emotional reactions. Fear may have been directed to the fear of tremendous pain, or possible death. Reiki’s calming effects of “all is well,” even when we are faced with some of life’s most challenging moments, can diminish these difficult emotions.
When we find purpose in the most trying events of our lives, a loving acceptance develops. Many years ago, before my own spiritual growth through the use of Reiki, I have a vivid memory of a friend expressing gratitude for her chronic condition. She talked about all the benefits of this complex disease that truly changed her life. At the time, it sounded very strange to me. I reflected upon her attitude as I experienced my own healing journey of my chronic condition. I finally understood, accepted and expressed gratitude for my own difficult moments.
This is yet another way that Reiki brings many gifts and blessings into our lives.
