Have you been affected by recent events in the world? If you are sensitive to energy and mood, you likely can’t help but feel the effects of erratic emotions swirling about in our day to day lives. If you work with the public, use public transportation, shop or even travel our roadways, you often will witness interactions that demonstrate fear, anger and frustration.
Even if you are sufficiently isolated and haven’t experienced any tension firsthand in your community, anger and division are starkly apparent in the press, on television and in social media. Erratic emotions of others can be disturbing, even alarming, and it is not easy to shut out this assault on our sensitive natures. A constant barrage of negative images and dialog can make us feel like hiding under the covers and not coming out until the dust settles. Just how do we keep emotional and spiritual balance in the face of all that is happening around us?
Fortunately, we in the Reiki community are able to refocus on the core values we have learned in our practice. We can choose to turn away from the unrest and direct our attention toward the writings and wisdom of ascended masters such as Mikao Usui. There is a wealth of wonderful and inspirational resources available to us, among them the Reiki precepts:
Just for today, I will not anger,
I will not worry,
I will be grateful,
I will be kind,
I will do my work diligently.
Reiki energy is a wondering healing tool. Allowing Reiki to flow can calm ourselves and others. It will help with anxiety generated by world events and political change. Distance Reiki is a powerful method to send love and light to areas of the world in need of calm and grace. In addition, you can shield yourself and others from harm and lower frequencies. Envision a white, green or pink protective shield of light around yourself of someone else who needs it.
Stay grounded and call upon the elements to assist you. Use the power of the cleansing wind, the pure energy of fire, and the cascade of water in your shower to wash away negativity. Ground to mother earth and draw energy up through your body and energy centers. Start with your Root chakra and connect to each until you reach the Crown chakra. Remember that the people who cause unrest and agitation are not necessarily bad or evil, but simply wrong, perhaps spiritually sick. Send love and light and ask spirit to enlighten them. This will benefit you as much as it does them.
Are you acquainted with your spirit animals or are you distant and out of touch with them? Mindful connection with these powerful allies will give you protection, strength and courage. The elements and your spirit animals are always available and wait for you to call them.
At our core, we are healers and as such can bring about real change in the world. But first, we must practice basic self-care to stay balanced and spiritually fit.
- Take care of your physical body. Take a walk, do some yoga, ensure you are getting a healthy diet. Drink lots of water.
- Get plenty of rest and limit your exposure to negativity online and in print.
- Resist the urge to binge whether this is on television, or ice cream. Avoid alcohol and sugar.
- Light a candle and sit in quiet meditation. Release the day and all that no longer serves you. Allow love and light to fill you and replenish your faith in the good that exists in the world. Recharge with mindful meditation.
- Above all, stay safe and be a power of good in the world. You may not think you are making a difference, but your strong, calm energy sets an example and strengthens those who may be dealing with their own fears.
