The Color Orange

When I think of the color orange, my first thought is the wild and crazy ‘60’s and ‘70’s when psychedelic colors were the rage. (I know I am dating myself, but I was quite young during that era!). I remember brightly-colored posters advertising rock ‘n roll bands; short A-line dresses and tiny miniskirts in colors that popped; and vibrant colors displayed on our new colored television set. Our dining room walls were covered with large stripes of orange, yellow and green wallpaper. There was an exciting energy that permeated this era, and the color orange seemed to be everywhere.

The color orange is associated with the Sacral chakra, one of the most important chakras in our lives. Yet, sometimes it seems to receive little attention. The words, sacral and sacred, are from the same root word; the Latin derivative is sacer, meaning to make holy. Working with the Sacral chakra, especially with Reiki healing energies, will assist us in recognizing wholeness again.

To live fully, one must cooperate with the flow of life, and not be resistant to it. Accepting changes, no matter what the source or purpose, can be a difficult task. Rather than fight changes by building obstacles to moving forward, we can decide to enjoy the ride. A good analogy is visualizing yourself on a swift river. You have a choice to make. You can fight the current, trying and trying to swim upstream. How exhausting is that choice?! Or, you could decide to float with the current, and let the waters take you for an interesting, fun ride. Going with the flow allows us to experience our lives in exciting ways.

The flow of life also extends to our sexual selves. Are you comfortable with your sexuality? Can you identify your sexual needs and wants? Is your belief system congruent, or in opposition to, these needs? Do you hear “old” messages that make you feel guilt or shame? Do you embrace your sexuality as part of the beautiful whole being that you are? Embracing our entire physicality is an essential component of wholeness.

The Sacral chakra is where the gift of new life begins. This creation of life is cooperating with the Divine in bringing souls onto Mother Earth. This is certainly one special way of living a life of purpose and meaning. Every person has the gift of creativity, to bring beauty and grace to our world. Participating in the miraculous creation of a new life is a gift indeed.

Once again, nature gifts us with many insights to the rainbow of colors that are available to us. As Reiki practitioners, our awareness of these gifts grows, as we learn to live in harmony with our world. The most glorious display of the color orange in nature has to be the many hues of a gorgeous sunset. Take a few minutes to watch a sunset within the next day or two. Absorb the many orange rays; feel the ever-changing energies as the sun disappears from sight, leaving its gift of light and love. There is a sacred quality to this daily event. By expressing gratitude for this natural, healing sunlight, we connect to the Divine and have the opportunity for wholistic growth.

Although the color orange may not be “in” right now, there are many ways to bring its loving energies into our lives, in body, mind and spirit. Beginning the day with an orange, or a glass of orange juice, is a good start; adding other orange-colored foods throughout the day will be helpful. Or, buy orange-colored flowers to brighten up a room. Simply meditating on the color brings the energies into your thinking mind. Expressing thankfulness when you spot the color orange – a scarf, a bookbag, a billboard – will build your loving, spiritual energy. When you give Reiki, for others or yourself, remember to send an intention for the person to flow with life.

Creativity and gratitude are a dynamic duo – embracing the color orange will manifest its loving, wholistic energies in your life.
