Article by Deborah Lloyd, Reiki Master
No matter what spiritual or religious path one pursues, an essential step in reaching one’s full potential is to be of service to others. The practice of Reiki is certainly focused on serving others. The Reiki practitioner is merely an instrument, channeling pure loving and healing energies for the highest good of the other person. The best thing a practitioner can do is set aside her own ego and simply allow the energies to flow.
When we see ourselves as an instrument during Reiki-giving times, shifts in our belief system and attitude occur over time. Often, we are not aware of these subtleties, as they enter our subconscious, little by little. For example, in your early days with Reiki, you may think of yourself as someone with a special talent who can heal others. But, slowly, this attitude shifts as you feel humbled and thankful that you are a facilitator in bringing healing energies to your loved ones, and perhaps to clients, through this wondrous modality. Although all of us can explain Reiki to a degree, at the end of the day, we know there is something greater than us doing this work.
Humility is a needed quality when serving others. Humility is a word that is frequently misunderstood. Often, people think humility equals a lack of confidence, a passive submissiveness, or a derogatory aspect of one’s personhood. Nothing could be further from the truth. Humility is the awareness of the Universal Life Force Energy working with us, when serving others is the goal. Affirmations of this truth are given to us constantly, through signs and synchronicities. The more we see the signs, and give gratitude, the more we recognize the Universal Life Force Energy in our lives, and in our work.
Another shift that occurs is a growing compassionate attitude toward others. It is often too easy to make judgments about other people’s lives. But, when we are given the opportunity to become a healing facilitator (no matter what the modality or situation is), we see the other person in a new light. Recently, a middle-aged gentleman, unshaven, tired, and dressed in unkempt clothing, came in for his first session with me. He was unlike a typical Reiki client. He said he came for a session because he was having problems with sleeping. As he received Reiki, I felt the sadness and fatigue within him and felt the light energies flow strongly into his body. I felt the loving and healing energies flow into his being; my heart chakra grew in compassion. After the session, he shared his overwhelming difficulties in finding work; then he stated it felt like all his troubles had just floated away. While his life circumstances did not change in that hour, his energy certainly did. He was calmer, lighter and ready to face his problems.
When our focus remains on giving the gift of Reiki to others, we also realize many benefits. Our personal development blossoms as the beautiful characteristics of humility and compassion grow. Reiki is truly a wondrous gift – for the giver and the receiver!
