Personalized Reiki Sessions

Let’s look at how you can personalize a client’s Reiki session. By asking a few questions prior to the appointment you can tailor the session to fit the unique personality of each person that you treat. Personalizing the session allows for a more individualized practice that can create deep satisfaction and clients that return for more sessions.

First, let’s keep the process simple by thinking of the five senses when envisioning how to personalize the session. We’ll look at sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste.

Ask the client if they have a preferred light setting. If you are able to adjust the lighting then this can have an immediate impact on the clients in the moment they walk in. I have had clients that had impaired sight and needed bright lights, while having other clients that felt more comfortable with muted lights. With a brief question about the client’s preferences in regard to lighting, you immediately offer a sense of caring and concern for their mood and energy.

Will you have blankets or sheets for your client? Will they be soft, weighted or warm? Do they have a fresh and clean scent? Ask the client, before they arrive, if they like the feel of sheets or blankets. To some, this can offer a sense of security. To others, blankets and sheets can feel restrictive and cause anxiety. Does the client have any concerns about cotton or synthetic fibers? How will the texture of these coverings enhance the overall experience?

Personalized Reiki Sessions

Does your client want music? Do they prefer natural sounds? What if they prefer not to hear the sound of running water because it might make them have to use the restroom? Is there a particular sound that relaxes them? Do they enjoy hearing the flute, drums or bird calls? It’s essential that the music, or background sound, does not distract the client. This is a really important topic to know beforehand because the sound can greatly enhance the session, but conversely, without consulting with your client, the sounds might be antagonistic to their receptivity of the healing energy.

The sense of smell is so important because it can trigger memories or impact health. Personally, I enjoy the scent of vanilla, while lavender has the tendency to trigger an asthma attack. If you use incense, make sure the client likes incense. Many people find it too strong. A light scent based on your client’s preferences is a key part of helping them relax and savor the experience.

After the session, will you offer your client water? Perhaps they like herbal teas? Is there a specific kind of tea or drink that would align the session with their comfort? Does your client prefer hot or cold drinks? Make sure you have asked them this and be prepared to offer this drink to help them reorient back to the now.

Using the five senses as a basis for pre-session clients can help you create unique and individualized Reiki treatments that can build lasting relationships with your client base.
