The common cold is caused by viral infections of the nose and throat (upper respiratory tract). It is generally benign and can be overcome by simple herbal medicines or medicated lozenges, sprays and gargles. However, some people have a tendency to suffer from cold and cough very frequently due to poor immune function. Some people blame it on the change in weather while others just prefer to take flu shots. If we look at it closely, this often happens because of deeper emotional reasons and requires intervention at the energy level.
Frequent colds are a manifestation of an imbalance in the Throat and Heart chakra. The Throat chakra governs our communication, self-expression, and authenticity. The Heart chakra governs our ability to love others and connect at the personal level. When we keep accumulating small hurts throughout life, starting from early childhood- especially when the relationship with the mother is unsatisfactory and painful – it creates a state of overwhelm, confusion, helplessness, and stress. The person is unable to express his pain and keeps sulking inside. The Heart chakra and the Throat chakra become obstructed and vulnerable to infections in the chest and throat area, resulting in repetitive cycles of cold and cough. It is often accompanied by poor digestion and therefore suboptimal immune function (imbalance in solar plexus too).
From the Ayurvedic perspective, colds signify an excess of ‘kapha’ dosha. ‘Kapha’ consists of earth and water elements, so kapha dosha is accompanied by the deficit of either air and/or fire and ether. Balancing the Heart, Throat, and Solar Plexus chakras helps alleviate and gradually optimize the said deficits. Here is a primer on how to balance these elements and end the vicious pattern of frequent colds:
1) Diaphragmatic breathing
We take breathing so much for granted, without ever utilizing its full potential to heal. So I strongly advocate deep breathing as a part of healing any kind of respiratory issues such as ‘cold’ and ‘cough’. Incorporate deep breathing into your everyday routine, as I have suggested in my previous article ‘Reiki and Breath therapy in the wake of a Pandemic’. This helps to increase the ‘air’ element and boost our immunity creating an atmosphere that would not be conducive to the growth of the harmful microbes.
2) Practice yogic mudras
Practice yogic hand postures like Surya Mudra and Jal Shaamak Mudra for 5-15 minutes everyday. While the former reduces the earth element, the latter helps to reduce the water element in the body, restoring the balance. (As a word of caution, these mudras should be practiced only after knowing your exact constitution (as per Ayurveda) and under expert guidance).
3) Express yourself and communicate your feelings
You need to express yourself and connect with like-minded souls (energies) with whom you can be your authentic self. This helps to open up the Throat and Heart chakras. If you live by yourself, take a nature walk and hug the trees and let your heart feel the vibration of love. Love is the highest frequency which has the best healing potential. Let go of the past wounds and allow your entire being to be permeated with the joy of love. Express yourself through writing a journal, or even better through an artistic hobby like singing or dancing.
4) Reiki your Throat, Heart, and Solar Plexus chakra
Cleanse, energize and heal your chakras every day (with special emphasis to Throat, Heart, and Solar) while maintaining the intention of perfect health. When you maintain a high vibration throughout the day, the pathogens like viruses or bacteria have no choice but to leave your body. The pathogens survive on the low vibrations of sadness, fear, guilt and shame. When your chakras vibrate at a high frequency, the pattern of sickness breaks and vigorous health is just a byproduct of that.
It’s high time we embrace our vibrational nature and determine to uproot every physical and emotional sickness that plagues us. Our emotions and thoughts are the real pharmacists, and it is for us to make the best use of them.
