Each person has both masculine and feminine energies within themselves, no matter what the gender, or the sexual orientation, of the person is. Neither energy body is more important, nor superior, to the other. Both are essential in living a balanced life. Usually, one form is more dominant than the other within a person. An energy imbalance is caused when one of these forms is too dominant, causing the other to be too minimal.
Let us begin with descriptions of both kinds of energy
- Masculine energies can be described with the following words: assertive, focus, clarity, willpower, knowledgeable. There is a leaning towards the logical, cognitive side of the brain.
- Feminine energies are defined by these words: flowing, creative, emotional, expressive, nurturing. These energies lean towards the intuitive aspects of the mind. To achieve personal wholeness, all aspects of these energies need to be supported.
Reiki practitioners frequently receive impressions about these energy bodies. It is not uncommon for masculine energies to be felt more easily on the right side of the body and the feminine energies on the left side. The right side also gives information about the future, while the left side can hold past memories. Masculine energies are needed for moving forward in life, while feminine energies are necessary for dealing with past events, especially painful or traumatic ones.
Sometimes, one form is too dominant for most of a lifetime. In some cultures, boys are socialized to be strongly masculine. They may be taught little boys don’t cry or express any emotions; boys should think logically and are discouraged from the creative arts or other so-called feminine pursuits. Girls are socialized to be nurturing towards others and encouraged to be artistic. Although these perceptions are finally changing, girls have been discouraged from scientific, mathematical and other cognitive-demanding fields in the past.
Many times, Reiki clients are dealing with messages they received as a child, whether it be from a parent, grandparent or general media. Recently, several clients have told me they were discouraged from creative fields, not because of gender issues, but rather due to financial concerns. In other words, a person can make more money (or so they were told) from engineering, accounting or healthcare, vs. practicing alternative energy modalities, clothing design or making jewelry. When we examine this advice, masculine energies receive more support than feminine energies. The logical mind has become more important than the creative soul. When we dismiss our passions, and our life purpose, an energetic imbalance occurs.
Other times, energetic imbalances are situational, as a response to a major event in one’s life. For example, if a person loses a job, unforeseen, and had no time for preparing for loss of income, the masculine energies may need to be dominant for a period of time to manage the crisis. Or, a child becomes ill, and a parent needs to be more nurturing and comforting.
A life of wholeness requires that both masculine and feminine energies are fully present and available as needed. Both cognitive and creative energies are needed throughout our lives. Every Reiki session – for others and ourselves – assists us in finding balance in our lives.
