Like many Reiki practitioners, you may be empathic or sensitive to energy. Because of this, you may tend to put the needs of your client first and focus solely on their comfort. What you may not realize is that this can actually cause less Reiki to flow to the client.
The amount of Reiki that you channel depends on how aligned you are with the Universe. The better you feel, the stronger your alignment with your higher self, and consequently the stronger your alignment with the Universe. This allows you to channel a higher frequency of Reiki; you’re at such a high vibration that the Reiki flows more easily to your intention instead of trying to help you along the way.
How can you align yourself with the universe?
There are many ways, and my personal favorite is by compounding energy. Compounding Energy is a term I use when I combine Reiki with other healing modalities or tools. Doing so raises your vibration and intensifies the Reiki. Below are some of my favorite tools to use when compounding energy:
Music/Sounds
During a Reiki session play music/sounds that lifts your spirits and raises your vibrations. That may be ambient music, or it may be show tunes, pop songs, Motown, the options are endless!
If you are working on someone in person, you may want to find something that works for both of you; ambient music is wonderful in this situation. However, if you are sending distance Reiki try picking music that feels good to you and/or works with your intention.
For example, if you love the beach ocean waves are a good choice as the sound will put you in a good mood. If the intention is to bring joy into the client’s life, maybe some cheerful Disney music is what you need.
Experiment with various types of music to see what feels best to you, and what places you in a positive mood. Then play the track(s) at the start of the session and keep them playing until the end of the session. You’ll stay positive throughout, and more Reiki will go to your client because of it!
Scents/Aromatherapy
Scents can come from candles, incense, essential oils, diffusers or anything else that stimulates the olfactory sense. The key with any of these is to use one that brings to mind positive memories or makes you feel good.
If you are working on someone in person, remember to ask before using any scent. If they don’t like a scent or are allergic to fragrances, it’s better not to use any. If they are open to using scents, consider using a gentler scent that won’t overwhelm them.
When you’re doing a distance Reiki session you’re free to use a scent that makes you smile! You can also use one that enhances your intention. For example, Lavender is calming, Rosemary is protective, and food scents (liked baked goods) may bring comfort.
Try different scents and see what you associate with them. Once you have one that lifts your spirits and/or works with your intention you can begin using it with your practice. Physically and energetically clear the space, then use the scent to start bringing in positive vibrations for your session.
Crystals/Minerals
Crystals are a popular and effective way to enhance your energy and boost your intention. Each crystal has its own properties, and you can find one in almost any shape/size needed.
If you’re working on someone in person ask for permission before placing crystals on them. It might be easier to place crystals around them, or under them, if the table/chair permits. Placing an amplifying crystal above their Crown Chakra, or below their feet can increase the energy they feel.
Whether you’re working on someone in person or working on a distance session you can wear crystal jewelry to compound the Reiki. Clear Quartz is excellent for this as it amplifies energy. It may help you to pick up more from the client, and easily discern what they need help with.
The key to crystals is making sure that they are clean and feel good. To learn more about crystals and how to use them there are several books that help you learn about them including The Encyclopedia of Crystals by Judy Hall.
Color
Colors are often associated with different feelings or ideas. (For example, green is connected to healing energy, and purple is linked with spirituality.) You can use this to support your Reiki practice. Whether you are working on someone in person or through a distance session, the color you are wearing, the color of the room you are practicing in, and the color of the Reiki all have a vibration that can give you a boost.
When you are working on someone in person you can use different colored blankets (or crystals) to support them. If someone is very nervous surrounding them in shades of blue may help them calm down.
Even in a distance session, you can energetically send different colors to them through Reiki. If I have a person who is heartbroken, I will ask that the Reiki flow with the energy of pink. If they need energizing, red will be the color I choose.
If you’d like to learn more about the energy of colors, Inna Segal’s The Secret Language of Color Cards is a great resource. Whatever you read and ultimately choose to use, the goal is to always a pick color(s) that makes you and the client feel good.
Although I listed my favorite tools above, there are many more you can use!
From the astrological properties of the planets to the energy of the season, don’t be afraid to experiment and see what works best for you. When starting to compound energy, try one extra tool first (ex. music), then slowly add in more as you get used to it. You may find that one or no tools work during an in-person session, yet two or more support you during a distance session.
Whatever you end up using always remember the goals is to find ways to help yourself and others get the most out of a Reiki session.

Thanks for sharing this informaion on compounding energy during Reiki. I am new to this and I have read a bit about crystals on other blogs. The book that you recommend by Judy Hall on Crystals seems like the a top pick to learn more about crystals.
I have been using for myself oils and they are great. They alter your mood/energy very positively. I use frankincense oil for meditation and I can feel the difference. It helps me go faster into meditation.
