The Root chakra, or Muladhara, is the foundation of our energy system, governing our sense of security, stability, and connection to the physical world. When balanced, we feel grounded and safe; when imbalanced, we may experience fear, anxiety, or financial and physical instability. To bring harmony to the Root Chakra, here are some powerful practices that can help restore balance and strength.
Root Chakra Grounding Meditation
This guided meditation helps to connect with the earth’s energy, bringing stability and a sense of security.
Steps:
- Find a Quiet Space: Sit or stand in a comfortable position. If sitting, keep your feet firmly on the ground. If standing, stand with your feet hip-width apart.
- Breathe Deeply: Close your eyes and take deep breaths, inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth.
- Visualize a Red Light: Imagine a glowing red light at the base of your spine. As you breathe, see this light growing stronger and expanding.
- Chant the sound LAM from the depths of your belly.
- Connect to the Earth: Picture roots extending from the base of your spine or feet deep into the earth, absorbing nourishment and strength. Imagine warm, powerful energy bringing you stability from the depths of the earth.
- Return to Awareness: After 5-10 minutes, gently open your eyes, feeling refreshed and connected.
This meditation, practiced daily, can significantly enhance feelings of security and resilience.

Root Chakra Activation with Physical Movement
Since the Root chakra is linked to the element of earth, engaging in movement-based practices enhances its energy flow.
Steps:
- Walking Barefoot: Spend 5-10 minutes walking barefoot on grass, sand, or soil. This practice, called “earthing,” helps absorb the earth’s electrons, stabilizing your energy.
- Grounding Yoga Poses:
- Mountain Pose (Tadasana): Stand tall, feet firmly planted, feeling the connection to the earth.
- Squat Pose (Malasana): Opens the hips and strengthens the lower body, reinforcing stability.
- Tree Pose (Vrikshasana): Balances the body and enhances focus, strengthening the Root chakra. All balancing poses ultimately help the Root chakra.
- Dance or Stomp: Engage in rhythmic movement like gentle stomping or tribal-style dancing to activate energy in the legs and feet. Drumming music in particular further enhances the Root chakra. Among dance styles, the Indian classical Bharatnatyam, Spanish dance Flamenco and tap dancing are all great for the Root chakra.
Further Support for the Root Chakra
Here’s how you can further enhance healing by working directly with Root chakra vibrations.
- Essential Oils: Use grounding oils like cedarwood, patchouli, or vetiver.
- Crystals: Hold or place red jasper, garnet, or black tourmaline on your lower spine or in your pocket.
- Journaling Prompts:
- Do I feel safe, secure and grounded at my workplace? In my home? In my body?
- What steps can I take to ensure I am more present and grounded in each moment?
- In what ways do I need to take more responsibility for myself?
- In what ways do I need to take responsibility for those dependent on me?
- What actions can I take to be more present in my body? What actions can I take to be more present in my relationships?
Balancing the Root chakra is essential for overall well-being. By incorporating these practices into your daily routine, you’ll cultivate resilience, confidence, and a deep connection to the world around you.
