For those who live by the Gokai, this is the first of the five Reiki Precepts. The English translation from the original is quite varied and the closest is probably “Just for today, do not be angry.” This does not mean that we don’t experience feelings of anger but rather that we do not live in anger… we process anger… we release anger. And most importantly, we don’t suppress our anger.
But to process and release anger it is important to understand anger. Anger is seen as a secondary emotion which is a result of a build-up of some of our unacknowledged and unprocessed basic emotions and experiences. Experiencing these underlying emotions often remain unexplored, mostly because it occurs at a subconscious level. But they do trigger an anger response. Exploring these underlying emotions can help us understand our anger, allowing us to process and to heal. It allows for living a healthier and a more compassionate life where our interactions with ourselves and others are more positive and fulfilling.
So, what are the true emotions that we experience that underlie and feed our anger?
- Feeling we are not good enough and unworthy.
- Feeling misunderstood.
- Feeling disrespected.
- Feeling betrayed.
- Feeling incompetent, insignificant, and irrelevant.
- Feeling that we are treated unfairly.
- Feeling victimised.
- Feeling unappreciated.
- Feeling lonely, unloved, and sad.
An accumulation of these emotions can inhibit our ability to live authentically and expressing ourselves truthfully, feeding the blanket emotion of anger. Many of these emotions originate somewhere in our past. Once we can identify these primary emotions, we can start tracing the origin of these emotions and begin the healing process.
With Reiki healing we can heal past trauma and wounds, thereby healing these emotions and the anger response. Using Reiki healing and in particular the Distant Healing Symbol, this is how:
- Make sure you find a quiet time and that you will not be disturbed or distracted.
- Relax comfortably, breathe in and out until you feel completely relaxed.
- Focus on one of the identified core emotions and bring it into your consciousness, setting the intention to heal the past trauma or wounds related to this emotion.
- Focus your mind on the problem (the situation, person and place) and send the Reiki symbols in this order Distant Healing Symbol, Emotional Healing Symbol, and Power Symbol.
- Write the details of the problem (the situation, person and place) on paper. Visualise and remember the trauma and/or wounds that resulted from this situation in as much detail as possible.
- Allow yourself to feel whatever you are feeling. Do not resist or suppress any of the feelings – allow feelings to be there without attachment and without judgment.
- Breathing calmly, close your eyes and send Reiki energy to it, for the highest good of all involved.
- Continue breathing and sending Reiki. Feel that your soul and that of any other person that may be part of this situation are integrated and vibrating at a higher frequency. Feel that you and that person (if applicable) are united in Universal energy and in total harmony.
- Finish the session when you feel that the healing has been completed and peace has settled in over the situation. It may take some time, depending on how strong the attachment is or how deep the trauma or wound was.
- Perform an Aura cleansing on the paper, do Gassho, and give gratitude to your guides and spirit guides.
- Thank Reiki, ground yourself, drink a glass of water and enjoy your new-found inner peace.
It is important that you carry out this procedure with a pure mind, then release your consciousness about it to your guides and spirit guides to avoid having this trauma or wound again. Use of Emotional Healing Symbol or any other symbols freely as your intuition guides you. Remember to stay relaxed – it is easy to become anxious when dealing with an emotionally charged past situation. Practice Hatsurei Ho afterwards to empower yourself. This process facilitates forgiveness and releases you and anyone else involved from the resonance of disharmonious vibration, i.e., the anger response. You are also released through the practice of “healing by love and harmony”. This leads to feelings of gratitude and the vibration of higher consciousness, allowing for a greater sense of well-being of body, mind, and spirit and authentically embrace the Precept of “Just for today, do not be angry”.
