Still after years of Reiki being available here, one of the topics about which I am frequently asked is self-healing.
Most Reiki course advertising is focused on, “Become a healer and treat friends, family, pets and the world” And the one person not mentioned? Ourselves.
Self-healing not only brings self-love – a love that leads to greater compassion for our family, friends, clients and the world around us – but it also brings self-knowledge. The greater we know ourselves the more wisely we can act and the more in tune with the flow of life we become.
So why do we neglect ourselves? Why do we have such a problem with spending time caring for ourselves?
Fear is one reason. Looking after others, placing our focus on them is way easier than facing our problems and unravelling our burdens. Self-healing seems like a daunting challenge. It is much easier for us to bury our head in the sand and pretend that life is wonderful. In the short term – perhaps. But the pain, discomfort, and emotional trauma that we try to ignore is a signal that something in our life isn’t working and needs addressing. But focusing on others is way easier. What if we ignore the signals that our body give us? Then the message becomes louder, clearer, and larger until we are finally forced through ill health, emotional breakdown, or loss to confront the issue. We need to realize that the fear of dealing with the issue is far less than the fear of our imagination. And when we do actually take control again? It feels marvellous.
Yes, it is true that giving Reiki to others does also mean that Reiki flows through us and heals us. However, there is no substitute for taking time out from our day and spending quality time in a healing session with just us.
Another reason we find self-healing challenging is the idea that it is selfish. We should ideally all be the priority in our own lives. This is not a stand point motivated by selfishness, but rather by selflessness. By ensuring that we are happy, healthy, and balanced then we can truly devote ourselves to our partners, children, causes, and clients without feeling resentment or regret; or becoming ill or stressed. And by staying healthy and happy we cease being a huge worry, or even a burden, to those who love us. But we have been taught so often that we must put the needs of others before ourselves. Yes, there will always be others who need our help, but only by taking care of our needs can we be a light that shines upon them. When we are happy and shining bright then we create and share light and joy. Just think of the joy we feel when those we love are happy and healthy?
What does Reiki have to teach us about self-love? The Reiki journey encourages us, and our clients, to take full responsibility for our lives – health and emotional wellbeing. This means not ignoring our problems or issues as they arise, especially as a practitioner. After all which clients will respond well to a healer who is submerged in their own problems. We need to shine for them.
Facing our problems requires honesty. One of the Five Principles of Reiki is, “Do your work honestly”. How can we be honest with others and in our work, if we are unable to be honest with ourselves? Also, Reiki teaches us, again in the Five Principles, to “be kind to every living creature”. Does that not include us? Our attitude towards, and ability to practice, self-healing highlights areas in which we feel a lack of self-worth. Our journey is one of self-growth and we should be grateful for the opportunity to know ourselves better.
For me, the main emphasis of Reiki is self-healing, no matter the level of Reiki we have taken on. Our healing journey, just like that of our clients, never truly ends and we need to continue being an example of courage and compassion to all our clients.
If we can display this courage to those around us, then we encourage others to do the same. We do not need to be fully healed in order to work with clients, but knowing that we are moving forward on our own healing journey, through our acts of self-healing, sends an important signal that caring for ourselves is never bad nor selfish.
Life throws so many challenges at us. as we live life. We encounter situations that create blockages in our systems and bring situations to the surface asking to be healed. It is not only compassionate, but it is our duty, to use Reiki to remove these blockages and heal our pains.
In this way we help everyone around us. Remember, as Reiki healers, we are not expected to be perfect. We face challenges just as everyone else, but we have the skills to deal with them. Let’s allow ourselves the time and space to do so.
