Everything started with sound. Sound is the origin of the universe. In Hinduism, the sound Om signifies the consciousness, the essence of the ultimate reality. It is the primordial sound and is called the Shabda-Brahman (universe as sound). There is an entire Vedic text, the Mandukya Upanishad, which is all about this sound.
We were a part of the sound before birth and shall merge with the sound after death; the sound of the spirit. The Bible too includes the line, “In the beginning there was a word and the word was with God and the word was God.” In the Guru Granth Sahib there is a beautiful verse, which begins with “Ek Omkar Sat Naam, Karta Purakh” which translates to “From sound (Om) everything has come, in sound, everything dwells, and into sound, everything will dissolve; both matter and consciousness.” This concept is in all religions in some or another form.
Sound is the energy that is created when things vibrate. Sound is all about vibrations. Likewise, the universe, matter, thoughts, emotions are all vibrating. We are a living vibrational field in constant motion and creating energy. The field of vibrational medicine or energy medicine utilizes this vibrational energy for health and healing.
In one of her books, Fay Weldon quotes, “Sound waves do not die out. They travel forever and forever. All our sentences are immortal. Our useless bleatings circle the universe for all eternity.” On the other hand, quantum physics with the famous double slit experiment proves that thoughts affect matter. When nobody was looking at the experiment the result was completely different from the one when someone was observing the same experiment. Scientists concluded that the observers’ thoughts altered the result of the experiment at the quantum level. That’s the profundity of everything we say and even think. This is how our thoughts affect our environment. This implies how everything we say and think can have an effect on us on some other occasion across space, time, and dimension.
Unsurprisingly, as we grow up, most of our thoughts go on an autopilot mode in the form of beliefs and conditional thinking patterns; thanks to parental and societal projections and conditioning. Most of the time, it is done subconsciously. According to developmental biologist, Dr. Bruce Lipton, our subconscious creates 95% of our reality without us knowing it. Telepathy is an example of how our frequency is in line with someone thinking about us. However, if the subconscious is not aligned with the correct frequency, we may attract negativity, unintentionally. This means that we need to go from a robotic mode to a conscious mode. That’s the reason why the Law of Attraction doesn’t always work or works only for a short time; because we have not worked on reprogramming our subconscious.
So the question that comes up is how do we reprogram our subconscious? Well, if sound is a vibration just like our thoughts, can we use this sound to alter our thoughts as well?
Music has been shown to influence the nervous system in a measurable way. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data have shown that music increases the density of gray matter and white matter integrity, and co-activation of auditory and motor areas of the cerebral cortex in the brain. However, it is noteworthy that these anatomical changes are brought about by rhythmic repetitive movements and not random musical movements. This is similar to the process of brain plasticity wherein repetitive reinforcement leads to learning and memory formation.
Brian plasticity seems to occur in three stages when it comes to music –
- It taps into the memory for example childhood lullabies, mating calls of songbirds, missing somebody dear etc. by generating physiologically coherent oscillations in the nervous system.
- It reinforces emotions associated with the memory by virtue of the arrangement of musical notes in a hierarchical structure.
- It evokes the pleasure and pain centres in the brain thus accounting for the happy or sad feelings by activating the dopaminergic pathways of nucleus accumbens, septal nuclei and amygdala.
Music thus leaves a lasting imprint on the nervous system of individuals. And who will not agree that the right music can be a meditative experience? A few verses of Mundaka Upanishad summarizes it beautifully –
“Taking as a bow the great weapon (sound) of the Upanishad,
One should put upon it an arrow sharpened by meditation,
Stretching it with a thought directed to the essence of That,
Penetrate that imperishable as the mark, my friend.
Om (sound) is the bow, the arrow is the Self, Brahman the mark,
By the undistracted man is It to be penetrated,
One should come to be in It,
As the arrow becomes one with the mark”
Sound waves reprogram our emotions and subconscious by influencing our brain waves (alpha, beta, delta, gamma, and theta). When we entrain our brain waves with music of a particular frequency, it acts on our subconscious. However, finding music with the right frequency is not always easy or feasible.
I have found a solution for entraining the brain waves with any repetitive rhythmic and uplifting music preferably without words to avoid associations. Please read again, repetitive music is the key. Considering that music is energy and that energy can be influenced with thoughts, I use Reiki to entrain music with a particular frequency.
How to Use this Technique?
It’s simple. Like any other technique, ‘intention‘ is the key. Use your symbols (especially along with the distance symbol) to pass on the intention into a piece of music. Imagine the intention passing over to the music that you want to use during healing. The same music can be used with a new intention every time. However, make sure you are using music that does not have past associations to any negative or contradictory emotion than the intention.
I go one step forward when I have to share a Reiki music (with a bell after every 3 or 5 minutes) with my students. I attune the music with Reiki so that the music has a healing effect whenever the student uses it.
The best part of this technique is that one is not required to visualize or meditate or affirm or put any mental or physical efforts while using it. Reiki starts flowing when the music starts. This is a wonderful way to attract all that you want, effortlessly.
