“Oh, by the way, I contacted the school to suggest they remind James he can use Reiki to calm down. I also let them know that he may ask other kids if they want Reiki and that it isn’t anything they need to worry about and won’t cause any harm.” I was a bit shocked at this statement from my son’s caseworker. He has some special needs and she helps us communicate those needs to the school. The last time she had visited us, my kids had shared their Level 1 Reiki Kids binder with her, and she had been very interested in it, but I was surprised she had contacted the school. I had never thought to so myself.
My son has a sensory perception disorder and ADHD. It can be hard for him to stay still, keep focused, and control his impulses. Too much noise or excitement can cause him to feel overwhelmed. We have had to use a variety of methods to cope with these issues, and Reiki has been one of them.
I have attuned my children to Level 1 Reiki, and we practice it regularly at home. I have taught them to use Reiki as a coping skill when they feel overwhelmed. It’s something they can do quietly and discreetly, and it helps them re-center and calm down. This has been very successful for us. It just never occurred to me to share with the school they were doing it. I was a bit surprised that they accepted the caseworker’s information so readily, to be honest. My children still prefer to do self-Reiki privately, but they like knowing that the school knows and that they are okay with it.
Practicing Reiki has empowered my children. Being able to channel Reiki gives them something else to add to their coping skill toolbox. It is like a magical tool that they have with them all the time and can use anywhere. They can be as open or discreet as they want to be when using it. It’s there for them when they feel sad, lonely, angry or overstimulated. It can help them focus during lectures and schoolwork and give them a bit of extra confidence for tests. It gives them a way to help themselves if they get hurt or start to feel sick. I can’t be with them at school, but I feel good knowing Reiki is.
Reiki fits into their toolboxes well with mindfulness, deep breathing, affirmative self-talk, and energetic cords connecting them to the people that love and support them. It also fits well with the help that they can get from their doctors, counselors, teachers, and school nurse. They know that Reiki isn’t a stand-alone cure for all things, but another tool in their arsenal of wellness.
Giving my children another way to care for themselves when they are at school is one of the many ways that Reiki has helped my family. We are grateful for this practice and everything it has done for us. I hope that someday more children will have this tool in their box.
