When a student first begins walking the path of Reiki, I like to encourage them to become a friend of the Life-Force. This is the way of shamanism, which considers everything to be alive and to have consciousness, which means we can develop a relationship with everything in existence.
It is beautiful to approach Reiki with a child-like innocence. Cast any skepticism aside and talk to the Life-Force the way a child would. Treat Reiki like an old friend that you spend time with daily, and allow the friendship to deepen as you get to know each other more and more.
This was the spirit in which the Sun salutations of Yoga came to us. Before Yoga adopted the practice, the Sun salutations were a Vedic tradition of honoring and communicating with the life-giving Sun. The Vedic practitioners offered salutations to the Sun at dusk and dawn to reset the aura with the Sun’s beneficial frequencies. They knew the Sun was alive and could be a friend or an enemy, depending on how we interacted with it. We can apply this understanding to Reiki practice and life in general.
In our modern world, it is considered crazy or illogical to “talk to the Sun”. Given the current state of planetary destruction, it is time we all reclaim our innocence and begin establishing a healthy friendship with life-with the Sun, the moon, the earth and all that exists. Who cares what others think? Talk to Reiki. Compliment your plants. Be crazy. Be weird. Life is too short to worry about appearances.
Deepening our connection to life is one of the beautiful natural consequences of learning Reiki. When we connect with the life force every day, we can no longer deny that everything is truly alive. If Reiki isn’t really working for you, take a look at the way you interact with the Life-Force. Do you honor Reiki for what it is? Are you good friends? How much are you giving in the relationship?
As Reiki is present in everything, think of everything you have as being alive and conscious, even your computer, your car, your house. Of course, the consciousness of your toothbrush is rather primitive compared to human consciousness, but it is still consciousness. Observe how much longer your computer lives when you treat it as a living entity.
There is much joy to be found in befriending seemingly lifeless objects. It can become a practice of gratitude for everything in our lives and a way to honour everything that serves us, from our toothbrushes to our vehicles, from our homes to our Sun.
Become a great friend of Reiki. Don’t be embarrassed to greet the Life-Force every morning with a “Hello Reiki my dear friend. I honour you and ask that you move through me freely today and every day. Let me see you in everything. Let our friendship bring much needed healing to our world.”
