Today Reiki is more popular than ever before. So many people are seeking out Reiki to heal and are taking Reiki classes to become practitioners. There are many different types of people who practice Reiki. Many of them have extra gifts. Psychic Reiki is becoming an in thing in the spiritual community. Clients are now sometimes even expecting multiple services in a basic Reiki session. What if you are a Reiki Practitioner who is not psychic or intuitive? Can you even be a practitioner without having extra gifts you can offer a client? Where do you fit into the Reiki world today?
I am intuitive, psychic and a Reiki Master Teacher. I do offer several different services to clients. However, I also offer regular Reiki sessions to people without any messages being delivered to the client. Is one type of session more powerful than the other? In my experience, no! Both are special. Reiki in its natural form is simple and pure. Over time practitioners have started adding in their own twist and include different healing modalities in their sessions as well. Sometimes psychic insights, crystal work, essential oils, and several other things are paired with Reiki. This is wonderful and can help many people. For some people it can even help them connect to Reiki energy better. However, everyone is different and this is not true for everyone! A Reiki session without anything extra can be just as powerful on its own. Reiki energy heals on its own. It is important to remember that we as practitioners are just the vessel for this powerful and all-knowing energy.
My Reiki 1 students often report that they start to feel more intuitive the more into Reiki they get. However, it is important to mention that not everyone feels this way. Some people report that they have a new skill and love it but do not notice a difference with intuition or psychic gifts. Some even wonder if they can be a practitioner if they don’t start feeling like they have extra gifts like some of their fellow Reiki students do. There is absolutely nothing wrong with not feeling like you have more intuition or new psychic powers. Reiki will help bring out different things in your life and being psychic might not be one of those. Perhaps it helps you connect with your artistic side, your musical side, your carefree side or so many other positive things. That is completely normal and perfectly ok! I have students who have become wonderful Reiki practitioners who do not offer anything besides basic pure Reiki during their sessions. The Reiki sessions they provide for their clients are in no way any less! Reiki is simple, pure and full of love. There is no need to pair it with anything for it to be able to work.
Did you know that not every client likes receiving extra messages during a Reiki session? It goes against Reiki ethics to offer extra messages without the clients’ consent. Sometimes people really just want a regular and pure Reiki session!
I offer sessions that incorporate many different things and I also offer regular pure Reiki sessions. Truly, both are wonderful and important in their own way. Neither is better than the other and again both are special!
If you are considering being a Reiki Practitioner but are holding back because you do not feel intuitive and are not a psychic please do not let it stop you! There are people all over the world offering amazing regular Reiki sessions that do very well for themselves. The world needs as many positive healers as it can get. Don’t be scared! Being a Reiki practitioner is special. If you feel called to Reiki do not hesitate to take a step forward and see the amazing places Reiki can take you to. You never know how many people you will inspire just by being yourself.
Go for it! Reiki is calling you for a reason.

I am a Reiki Master Teacher. I am not gifted with any additional abilities. I have received reiki sessions during and after which unsolicited “psychic “ readings were given. It made me extremely uncomfortable. I’m an advocate for clarifying with the client whether they want the information. I am not opposed to receiving psychic readings or information, but only when I am seeking such, and am comfortable with the person doing the reading.
I think it is important that should a practitioner choose to offer modalities apart from Reiki that they are very clear with the client that those modalities are not past of a Reiki treatment.
As a Master/ Teacher taught in the oral tradition of Traditional Usuo Shiki Ryoho, I choose not to bring in other modalities as I feel Reiki is enough. If I were to offer any other modality it would be a separate session.
I am a Reiki practitioner, too. I am not special gifted but after I entered more levels and more techniques I became more sensitive to other things. Let’s say that I can feel the presence of the spirit of the ghost or I don’t know what in the rooms. Is it ok or should I do something with that? Before I would die of fear, but now I am not but I don’t feel comfortable with that.
Thank you a million times over. I finally came to accept that I will not be bestowed with psychic gifts and feel quite liberated by this. However, I was really surprised when clients expressed an expectation for messages as if this was a normal occurrence. This made me feel quite ‘less than’ other practitioners…..but Reiki brought me through those feelings of inadequacy and I’m now comfortable in being very up front about the ‘style’ of Reiki that I am providing (no messages) where it is important for me that they tune into their own experience which they can share after treatment and that I will offer my own insights and guidance to those experiences, should the invitation for me to do so be offered. It appears to be a more empowering experience for the client, and I value this exchange more than I would have thought possible.
Thank you for addressing this topic. I do not consider myself to be a spiritual medium. Not being able to offer a flow of intuitive insight has left me feeling “less than” when compared to other Reiki practitioners. It took me a few years to realize that what I have to offer in terms of my style of Reiki, my listening, and my presence are enough. I also learned to manage client expectations from the beginning. In our complicated world, I think new clients find it hard to believe that there could be something so simple and so loving and so healing. Thank you again for addressing this topic. It’s very important.
As said previously, ‘Manage peoples expectations.’
Learning of prior experiences with different practitioners opens the space. I’ve included a Yes/No question on the intake form, “Have you had a Reiki session before?” (okay, it’s poor grammar ;-).) & encourage people to ask questions about “today’s session”.
In my area, many people experience Reiki as an add-on to massage sessions. I’m adamant explaining I’m not a LMT! As conscious of those whom equate Reiki to “laying on of hands” or “faith healing” in light of their religions.
Reiki has vastly improved my listening skills… perhaps that’s its gift!
Great to bring this to practitioners’ attention. I offer ‘intuitive Reiki’ and the Reiki treatment comes first, and the perceived messages are enhancements. I do explain to people that I get images pertain to their healing intentions. Some people loved the messages, some didn’t know what to do with them (even though I had introduce the concepts and instructions). This article and the comments here are super helpful for me to reorganize my services a bit.
May everyone here at Reiki Rays have a beautiful Lunar New Year, a new moon in Aquarius. Opportunity to initiate innovation, to lead and walk with one another.
Thank you for your kind and wise words, Sue! So be it!
