Reiki for When the Healer Gets Sick

Article by Patti Deschaine

As healers, we practice excellent self-care. We try our best. We eat good naturally grown foods. We walk in nature. We understand the balance of effort and rest. We clear ourselves energetically and choose to socialize with people who are like-minded and vibrationally sound.

All of this is great. It’s a recipe for a long, happy life, but does it mean we will never be sick? No, of course not. That would be unrealistic. No matter how well we care for ourselves, there is always the chance that we will pick up a bug on a bus or a plane, or from a coworker’s sneeze or cough. We have friends, relatives, kids and grandkids that bring us into contact with a variety of cold and flu germs, viruses and other contagious maladies. Sadly, none of us are immune from the occasional bout of sickness. We are, after all, human and therefore vulnerable to human illness.

Is getting sick an indicator that we are somehow failing in our practice? No way! Getting sick is an indicator that we need to pay attention to our health in a different way. It’s time to slow down, rest, and take a break from our normal active lives and recuperate.

We are active, vital people. We want to manage our lives in a way that is productive without being overly taxing to our bodies. Maybe we have been overdoing it, packing too much into each day. Hours spent away from our normal activities can be used to reflect; to weigh how we spend our time and fulfill our responsibilities. In our down time, we can reassess to see if we are satisfied with our daily routine and the path we have chosen. Are we maintaining a healthy work/life balance, or is some adjustment needed? Are our days fulfilling, or a drudgery designed solely to bring home a paycheck? Sometimes our body communicates what our conscious mind refuses to see.

When someone we care about is ill, we may physically work with them to heal with Reiki hands-on healing. Alternately, we may send them Reiki over time and distance if they are not local to us. We may plan a ceremony to honor them and to see them in divine light and love. Always, we must see them as healed and whole. We never pity them or feel sorrow at their condition. Seeing them in the best possible light, healthy and strong, lifts them up and provides the healing strength to raise them in spirit and provide the necessary support. So it is for ourselves. Instead of wallowing in our illness, we give ourselves Reiki. We see our bones, tissues, cells, mind and heart as vibrant and strong. We envision a state of complete wellness and strength. We don’t focus on our symptoms. We rise above the illness and mentally step into a state of wholeness.

Meditation can be a powerful tool to jumpstart our recovery. Our healing meditation may include candles, music, sage or other tools familiar to us. We find a quiet place where we will not be disturbed. We settle and breathe deeply. We fill our lungs with nourishing, calming air and bring ourselves to a state where we can see universal energy flowing, clearing blockages and rejuvenating our body and spirit.

If it is in our practice, we call in helping supportive spirits. Power animals, angels, guides, ascended masters, entities we are familiar and comfortable with. We surround ourselves with their love and support. We ask them to assist in clearing away the negativity or lower frequencies that are keeping us down.

We should not underestimate the power of words and the thoughts we allow. Instead of thinking, “I am so sick,” we say, “My body is strong and healing me to wholeness.” We use this as a healing mantra throughout the day and in meditation.

When we find ourselves under the weather, we do all the right things. As healers, we have access to many wonderful remedies: plant medicines and teas, immune strengthening essential oils, soothing baths with Epsom salts or other ingredients. These, along with our self-healing Reiki and focused meditation, can shorten illness and return us to wholeness.

It’s amazing to me that recently everyone around me getting the flu, including myself, was affected much worse than I was during my own bout with the illness. I credit that to my Reiki practice and the tools I use within it. Thank you for your article.

I use energy medicine to keep my immunity up.

Under your breastbone is a calcifies thymus gland. If you thump it, it puts your immune system into overdrive.

When you get a cold, you always feel it at the bridge of your nose. Thump your thymus and that’s as far as it goes.
