Article by Reiki Master Sunetra Dasgupta
When I work with a new stone, I simultaneously try to find the side effects of it, or if there is any superstitious attached to it, and I did find it in the case of Opal. In the 1800s Opal was considered to be an ill omen and that was all thanks to Sir Walter Scott’s bestselling novel, “Anne of Geierstein”, written in 1829. It was the story of Lady Hermione, who is falsely accused of being a poltergeist, and dies shortly after a drop of holy water accidentally falls on her opal and destroys its color. People who read it considered this novel as a warning against owning an opal, and they let it go.
For a century the Opal was not preferred and its market crashed for no rhyme and reason. It was only in the late 1870s that the Opal market in Australia started rising again. Though people were quite cautious it was only Queen Victoria did not believe in this superstition. When her daughters got married, she presented each one of them with an Opal and they all fared well in their lives. In Asia Opal stands for a symbol of hope.
History of Opal
The opal’s name comes from the Latin word Opalus or Sanskrit word upala, which means jewel or Greek word opallios, which means to see a change in color. Opal has 97% production in Australia but is also found in Europe, Brazil, Peru, Mexico.
In Roman civilization, Opal was linked with good luck and hope but in France they believed that Opal could appear to make its wearer invisible, allowing them to steal without being caught which also may have been the beginning of Opal’s negative associations. In Greek mythology, Zeus was believed to cry tears of opal after he defeated the despotic titans. Because of these tears, the Greeks formed the belief that the Opal possesses prophetic powers. Aborigines in Australia view the Opal as God’s footprint which touched the earth at the beginning of the rainbow. Whatever the reason is, we all agree it is a beautiful stone.
Healing properties of Opal
Opal is a delicate and fine stone. It has to be handled very delicately as it has the tendency to dry out or break easily, but it is a stone with vibrant energies. It helps to enhance one’s consciousness and see beyond the third dimension. One of the best crystals to boost our creativity and originality and get our left-hand side of the brain work extra hard to get those creative juice flowing. It is also a great stone to help us feel great about ourselves and increase the self-love within us. It is a great stone to be used along with blue crystals, and I generally charge it with the emotional and distance Reiki symbol to enhance its energies.
Opal is a Karmic and a magnifier stone. It helps us to remember that whatever we do it comes back to us and more, so if our actions are aligned with the universe, good things shall get shower on us ten times or more and vice versa. It is a good stone to keep out actions and thoughts to keep us positive all the time!
It is a highly protective stone, which will ward of all negative energies and psychic attacks from you, but also it will help you to get unnoticed by people who do not wish you well.
It is a highly beneficial stone for woman as it helps in childbirth also soothe out period cramps and PMS. Apart from all this, it is an excellent stone which helps in detoxifying the blood, regularise insulin, improve eyesight, kidney regeneration, lymph, cold and flu to name a few. Thanks to its regenerative properties it is a good idea to keep opal handy when one is recovering from a long term illness. It can also be used as an anti-aging stone, as it brings out the youthfulness among people, and help them to accept their beauty, as we all are beautiful.
Spiritual Healing with Opal
It helps in letting go off bitter memories and opens our heart to beautiful experiences. People who have a weak moon in their birth chart may use Opal to balance it out, also an excellent stone to connect to your dream realms. It helps you to go deep within yourself and rectify the flaws which are present in us. It also helps us become more grounded as it works extensively on our Root and Sacral chakra.
When working with this stone, keep it in water for a long period of time from time to time, else it has the tendency to burst or break. I do hope you work for this crystal and let me know your experience.
Blessed be 🙂
