Many Reiki healers tend to be empaths when it comes to picking up other people’s energy. Being highly sensitive can be tough when around a lot of heavy energy, be it at work or at home.
In today’s highly digitized world of social media, negative comments can be thrown left and right with anonymity and ease. Whether it is a negative review or a mean post, “not letting it get to you” and taking the high road tends to be easier said than done.
As a Reiki Master and Yoga Teacher, I’ve had my fair share of dealing with online haters. Though I’ve been fortunate to have only a few negative comments on social media, I’ll be honest, the negative comments stung for a lot longer than it should.
Though my head knows better than to let such unkind comments bother me, it just hurts to be misunderstood, disrespected, or “rejected”.
By now, I could probably put together a book of emails I’ve received from people who think Reiki is a “bad thing”. In fact, I once had a comment on Pinterest stating that Reiki was “satanic”.
So how does one take the high road when it comes to the online world? Fellow empaths, lightworkers and healers, here are my top 3 ways to help you set boundaries online.
1. Digital Detox
Going on a 24-hour digital detox can do wonders for the soul. By unplugging from social media, emails, and phone calls, we are able to fill up our tank by creating space for enriching activities.
If unplugging completely for a full day is just not possible, start with baby steps. Maybe remove some time sucking game apps on your phone and then slowly make your way up from there. When we feed our soul, we are able to shine our light even brighter and help more people.
2. Prioritize
We drive ourselves crazy when we make certain individuals a priority who only make us an “option”. Too much energy is wasted ruminating over what other people think of us.
The key to setting boundaries for yourself is to prioritize only those opinions that should matter in your life. This could be one individual but no more than five people.
3. Block
Sometimes it can be tiring to keep having to reinforce boundaries, so it’s time to block. Though I rarely read online reviews and comments, I do receive a lot of emails that don’t usually get filtered by my inbox. Thus, once in a while, I do come across some unkind words. When I do receive hate mail or negative comments, I don’t respond. I simply use the data points I gathered to block the haters.
Stay strong healers, lightworkers and empaths! We’re in this together!
