Back pain is one of the most common ailments today. About 8 in 10 people experience back pain of some or the other degree.
The Physical Problems
Back pains usually range from mild or nonspecific pains to serious ailments such as sciatica, slipped or ruptured discs and spondylosis. While the nonspecific pains are often muscle related, they might sometimes radiate from organs.
Nonspecific pains are usually sporadic or cannot be diagnosed, and the degree of pain can range from mild to unbearable.
Problems with the discs are caused due to bad posture or accidents disturbing the alignment of the discs and can be very difficult to heal through modern medical treatments.
About 5% acute low back pain are due to sciatica, or nerve root pain, and the pain travels along the nerve, sometimes all the way to the foot.
The Emotional Equivalent
There is almost always a physical story to explain away the pain, but through careful observation, we realise that any external circumstance cannot hurt us until we have created a weakness in a particular part of our body through our thoughts first. Let us understand what thoughts affect the back.
Upper back pain and neck pain occur when we carry the weight of the world on our shoulders. It could also be if one is feeling watched ‘he’s on my back’. The middle back often aches when one is unable to cope with the magnitude of work – think ‘backbreaking’. It is also accompanied by guilt as a result of being unable to cope. Guilt related to emotional reasons often affects the lower back, as does feeling unsupported.
If it is someone else that is suffering from back pain, often asking them about their present life and carefully observing their language gives us clues. Many will repeat terms like ‘feeling unsupported’ in the case of lower back pain for instance, or ‘feeling the weight of the world’ in the case of upper back pains.
Healing the Back
Having a rough idea of the emotional root cause helps as you can send Reiki to heal that specific issue too. However, even without any idea of the emotional cause, Reiki works wonders. The most important part of the healing is daily self-healing for all the chakras in the front as well as the back. Short-cut healing methods work for quick cleanses, but do not help with long term resolution. If it is too hard to reach the back chakras, one might place the hands on the front chakras and focus on the back chakra, requesting Reiki to flow to the back.
Combining slow yoga with Reiki is also usually very powerful. After starting with the Reiki prayer, request the energy to flow through your entire body, and then practice the poses. The energy flows in much more powerfully. If you have completed level 2 or higher, you should have a strong enough intuition to receive guidance as to what the next pose should be.
The pain is not due to the emotional root cause – it is due to the resistance to that cause. For instance, if you have zeroed in on guilt, it is not the guilt, but the desire to stop feeling guilty that is causing the pain. While it is natural to want to ask Reiki to resolve the guilt altogether, our resistance to it causes the healing to slow down – so asking Reiki to help you accept the guilt gracefully will be far more effective and quick.
The Potential
Serious problems take time, but in my experience almost all back problems can be healed, even if they are so serious that surgery is recommended. If it is as serious as disc prolapse, it might take a year or so of regular self-healing to be able to completely bring the back to normal. Sciatica often heals in a couple of months or less. If doctors are unable to diagnose the problem and the pain persists despite regular Reiki healing, it is best to get help from a healer as it might be an energetic problem.
