Often, when we think of a smile, we think of a person’s happy facial expression, displaying humor and delight. Does the Divine Spirit have a face? Can the Divine Spirit smile? Those are theological questions that I will not attempt to answer here. However, we can explore the possibility that the Divine is a Loving Energy Force that embraces humor and delight. So often, we are very serious about the Divine and forget about the joy found within this realm. We may be overlooking a large aspect of this Energy. Reiki should be a reminder that there are many ways to live in joy – and humor too. Smiles and laughter must be a part of our human existence.
Many of us on the spiritual path take delight in the humorous ways that Spirit communicates with us. Synchronicities can stop us short, with the incredible “coincidences” that occur, to help us receive an important message. After a recent Reiki session ended, a client reported he’d heard about a local acupuncturist three times in the previous week. He seemed somewhat embarrassed by sharing this information, but also wondered what it could mean. Immediately, I knew he was supposed to schedule a session with the acupuncturist, to further the healing of his aching knees. I also shared with him the Power of 3’s – if he hears or sees something three times, he needs to pay attention to this spiritual sign as he is receiving guidance, in a fun and interesting way.
The Divine utilizes everyday moments to speak to us. One of my favorite signs is goosebumps. Frequently, when I hear a spiritual truth, goosebumps appear on my arms. It can be a friend talking about a dream, a client sharing an insight she received during a Reiki session, or a thought I have. The goosebumps always make me smile – Spirit wants to make sure I am not missing the importance of what is being shared. It is true! And, it is an affirmation that Spirit will do whatever it takes to get our attention – we simply have to be aware of it.
We can also communicate with Divine Spirit in a humorous way; it does not have to be solemn. Growing up in a religious home, I was taught to be serious about prayer. Church was not a place for giggling and joking. Broadening my perspective of prayer has given me a different understanding. Prayer is communication with Divine Spirit.
Many years ago, a good friend taught me a great lesson about prayer. She talks to God all day along, as if He is standing next to her. In fact, she looks to her right and says what she is thinking, positive and negative. She talks out loud when she is home, and silently in public, as she does not want to appear as a “crazy lady” (her words). This friend has a great sense of humor, and she is not shy about telling God exactly what she thinks, often in very funny terms. She is real in her dialogue – it is not censored, or tailored to a specific belief system. She communicates with her husband, family members and friends in a similar manner. I think the Divine Smile delights in her honesty and wittiness.
Finding joy with the ways the Divine communicates with us is an important lesson indeed. Let us embrace the happiness that Reiki can bring into our lives.
