Article by Deborah Lloyd, Reiki Master
Most people who know anything about Reiki most likely have some knowledge of Dr. Mikao Usui, often credited with the rediscovery of Reiki. Dr. Usui, who lived from 1865-1926, was a scholar who studied the theology of several religions, psychology, medicine, and history. He traveled to many countries, in the east and west. In 1922, while on a Buddhist retreat, the Reiki energies were “downloaded” to him. Immediately, he began treating people; he passed on the abilities to give Reiki, through attunements and trainings, to over 2000 people.
This account may not be historically accurate, as one can find several variations. Historical accuracy is not the important aspect; what is important is that Reiki is now a worldwide practice. And, Dr. Usui had an essential role in bringing this practice into the world.
Pondering some aspects of his life can teach us very important lessons, as we too are called to expand Reiki in today’s world. Let’s begin with the aspect of his interest in so many subjects. While most of us do not have the luxury of wealth or time to become well-traveled, eclectic scholars, all of us certainly have the opportunity for lifelong learning. It simply takes curiosity, a little effort and a decision to set aside time for learning. Knowledge can be obtained easily nowadays – through comparatively inexpensive books and the Internet. We can attend webinars and listen to inspiring blogtalk radio, in the comfort of our own homes. The more we learn about all aspects of energy healing, the more effective we become in our Reiki practices.
Life Lesson #1: Learning is a lifelong process.
When the Universe offered Dr. Usui the gift of Reiki energies, he accepted it (how it exactly happened is debatable, but that is not the point). Dr. Usui was open to the possibility that some kind of metaphysical, spiritual, mystical, mysterious, or esoteric phenomenon manifested in his life. He believed these energies were authentic and powerful. He immediately began healing sessions with people with physical ailments, and soon discovered emotional/mental and spiritual healing also occurred. Can you imagine the pure joy he must have felt? Do you participate in that joy when someone you have shared Reiki with, experiences healing? Because Dr. Usui was open to the gift of healing, all of us experience his joy.
Life Lesson #2: When you are open to unlimited possibilities, gifts will be given to you.
It was only four years from the Buddhist retreat to Dr. Usui’s earthly death. Only four years in one person’s life – and look at the impact on the world. It is doubtful he had any idea how many people would be touched through the healing power of Reiki energies. Perhaps, he knew it would have some impact in Japan and nearby countries. Did he know that within a century there would be Reiki practitioners in almost every corner of the world? Did he realize how significant his role in Reiki practice was?
So often, we minimize the impact we have in the world. But, there is always a ripple effect, in everything we do. A one-hour Reiki session that I provide in Asheville, North Carolina, United States of America – does it make a difference? – absolutely!! In the same way that you make a difference with every Reiki session that you do.
Life Lesson #3: All thoughts and actions (including Reiki treatment sessions) have a ripple effect, truly making a difference in the world.
Isn’t it interesting to examine the lives of others, and learn what in their lives teaches you how to live a more fulfilling, and purposeful, life? Dr. Usui shows us the way to live a Reiki path.
