Self-treatment with Reiki

Articles

3 Aug 2014

When I teach Reiki 1, I teach the importance of self-Reiki and forming the habit of doing this every day. Why? You may ask. Self-Reiki every day leaves you feeling energised, revitalised and it can help to overcome any niggly issues that are going on in life. It helps you to concentrate and focus on the day ahead – if you do it first thing in the morning. Alternatively it can wipe away the days issues if you do it last thing at night. It’s a beautiful and glorious habit to indulge in and it only need take five minutes, if that’s all you have. The longer you can pamper yourself the better, of course; however some Reiki is better than no Reiki.

It can also help with any physical or emotional issues that are current. I received this email recently:

“I am suffering from indigestion problems. I have gone through many tests but nothing is detected. Sometimes I am severely constipated and another time I have loose motions. It started with low grade fever, but after medication, antibiotics, fever is gone, but the indigestion is there. I am regularly giving Reiki to my solar plexus and sacral chakra but it is not affecting. I am not able to understand how can I treat myself with Reiki?”

Reiki cannot be directed anywhere specifically, as it will go to where it needs to go, even when we are doing a self-Reiki treatment. Therefore I believe it’s helpful to set ‘intent’ to the Universe during your invocation. I can’t highlight enough the importance of doing your invocation at the start of any Reiki treatment as I believe this not only draws down and awakens the Reiki within you, but mentally it prepares you to give and receive Reiki. Adding intent also helps with more specific issues.

In the above situation, I would do an invocation such as:

“To my dear Angels above, in love and light, I ask to channel Reiki Healing Energy, for the total healing of mind, body and soul for myself. To my dear Angels above, in love and light, I ask that you help my body heal my indigestion problems, if this is for my highest interest or above. Thank you.”

Intent is good, and then trusting and leaving the rest to the Universal Energy is essential. If Indigestion is the biggest issue in your body/life right at the time of treatment than the Reiki will help that concern. If there are other things going on, you may not feel the Reiki has assisted this area. You may feel more energy or you may feel less emotional about things. Keep in mind that Reiki will work on areas that is of most importance at the time of a treatment.

It’s also vital that you give yourself an entire Reiki treatment, without just placing your hands over the solar plexus or sacral chakras. Of course if you only have time for a quick Reiki treatment, this is better than nothing, however an allover Reiki treatment can be done in five minutes, without concentrating on just one area. So bare that in mind whenever you start self-treatment.

Once the invocation is done and you are ready, I’d start with the crown, placing my hands on my head and feeling the beautiful energy radiate down my head and throughout my body. Feelings of comfort and love generally engulf me. I then work my way down from the head to the feet and back up again. You of course might like to start at your feet. I encourage you to start wherever you are comfortable, as there is no ‘right or wrong’ as long as you are relaxed and following your intuition.

Reiki Rays has a PDF file on the Reiki hand positions and even your Reiki 1 manuals should have hand positions inside. Please if you are not comfortable in trusting your own intuition when giving self-Reiki; use your manuals or the PDF as a guide.

The more Reiki the better, as is emphasized in this article, and so I encourage a routine such as to perform Reiki in bed, when you first wake up and last thing at night, when you go to bed. What a glorious way to commence and finish the day. I’m sure most people could find at least 10 minutes in the morning and evenings to do this. The benefits are profound and so rewarding. If you have longer to spend doing your treatment then I strongly encourage: the longer, the better.

Another tip that I encourage is to clear your chakras with every self-Reiki treatment along with using the hand positions. When I perform Reiki on a person physically here in my practice, or via distance, I always clear their chakras. Why should we miss out on this, if we are doing a self-treatment? Especially as it’s a powerful way to help balance and clear our bodies. There are numerous ways to do this such as:

  • Listen to a CD that has a chakra clearing exercise
  • Visualize a white light entering your crown and clearing all the chakras as it moves down your body
  • Physically touch your chakra points as you imagine and feel them being cleared
  • If attuned to the Distance symbol, use the substitute method, and clear a teddy bears chakras as you would when sending distance Reiki to someone. The difference is you are clearing and balancing your own chakras.

Putting all of the above together, this is how my self-Reiki treatment looks like.

  1. I say my Invocation
  2. I clear my chakras
  3. I do my hand positions
  4. I clear my chakras again
  5. I give thanks.

Thank you for reading this article and I hope it gives you some practical ideas on how to perform a self-treatment for any issue, or simply to feel great every day.

With love, light and harmony.

Hi Tammy. Thanks for the great article 🙂 I have just finished a three month reiki course – reiki one, two and advanced. I have continued doing the full self-healing every day since the twenty-one days ended. You mentioned that you can also do an all over reiki in five minutes. Can you explain how?
    Many thanks 🙂

Hi Lauren, that’s fantastic that you have finished a three month Reiki course. Brilliant. I hope you are enjoying the practice of Reiki. A 5 minute reiki treatment is done with leaving the hands on the body positions for a shorter time, because some reiki is better than no reiki. So if people only have few minutes to give themselves Reiki, then a five minute all over treatment is great. Of course a longer self-reiki treatment is much preferred but as we learn, some reiki is better than no reiki. It’s simply leaving the hands in position for a very short time. It can be done. I hope that makes sense. By all meansthe longer the treatment the better, and yet five minutes of Reiki is absolutely more beneficial no reiki.

    Hi Tammy,
Thank you so much for this lovely and very informative article. being a Reiki practitioner myself I always found it difficult to incorporate a longer time for my self healing everyday. I will do as u have suggested and get back to u soon. I completely endorse that ‘some Reiki is definately better than no Reiki’!!! Thanks once again. God Bless

Hi John, I’m so glad you enjoyed the article. Yes it’s very easy at times to let our self-treatment slip because life does get busy, however some reiki every single day is so beneficial. Thank you for your comment. Love, light and harmony. Tammy x

That’s great thanks Tammy, I needed encouragement as I quite often feel I’m too tired for Reiki or I do a distance healing on my list & then just want to sleep. Can I ask when I’m doing distance healing on more than 1 person should I do Raku to cut the connection after each person or at the end of the whole session. Love and Light. X

Hi Angela, thanks for your message, and i’m really sorry to hear that you become to tired for self-reiki. This is an indicator that you probably need to do the self-reiki ever more 🙂 are you already attuned to the Raku? How do you do your distance reiki? If you are sending general distance healing to a number of people (and not writing reports for them on what you felt etc) then you don’t need to do individual treatments for each person. You can set your intent do send reiki to person, A,B,C and D, and just do one session with them all receiving the reiki. Alternatively you could write everyone’s name down and place inside a box and send reiki healing energy to the box so everyone receives the reiki healing. Also I’m a little concerned that you are tired after giving a reiki treatment. This should not be the case if you are using Source energy. If you are using source energy then you should feel alive and energised after a treatment because you will have received it as well. Perhaps you are using your own energy/or not protecting fully? I hope this paragraph has given you something to ponder over and has answered your question. In short, if you are attuned to the Raku and send reiki to everyone at the same time, you need only use it once. If you chose to do one person and then another person and then another person, then I would use the raku after each person. If you are not attuend to Raku then this symbol would be difficult to use and be effective. Big hugs. Love light and harmony. Tammy x

Hi Carole, I’m glad you found the article informative and timely. We often forget ourselves, when truly its easy enough to give a quick reiki session, which is better than none at all. Big hugs. Tammy xxx

Hi Tammy. I too am a Reiki Practitioner and Teacher and the importance of self-treatment is so often not stressed enough in teaching and practicing Reiki – I love your article and am definitely adding it to the recommended reading section of my manuals. To further illustrate the importance and benefits of self-treatment, I would like to share my own and very recent experience: In October 2017 I spent 3 weeks in ICU and high-care with cerebral malaria. I had complete liver and kidney failure. I cannot remember much of the initial 2 weeks as I was heavily sedated, on a respirator and received daily dialysis to save my kidneys. During the 3rd week I became more alert and aware of the fact that I am still alive. Instinctively I started doing self-treatments whenever I came to, falling asleep again with my hands mostly on my abdomen. On the 25th of October I was discharged and was finally home – weak and thin and exhausted. The prognosis was that my kidneys were only just functioning and would, with dialysis 3 times a week, probably take around 4 months to recover if they ever do recover. Being home I actively continued self-treatment – every morning before I started my day and at the end of each day before falling asleep. Usually these self-treatments are only 10 – 15 minutes. My recovery has been phenomenal – my kidneys have recovered and improved their function to such an extent that I have been off dialysis now for nearly 2 weeks and the dialysis port will be removed next week as it is o longer needed. And that is just my physical recovery. I have also reaped the emotional, mental and spiritual benefits of Reiki self-treatment in my recovery and healing. I am so grateful for the wonderful gift of Reiki and all I can say is: Do your self-treatment – it is essential to you well being and not just a nice-to-have. Love and Light. Thea

Thea, thank you for such a heart warming story. I”m sorry you went through such trauma and illness, however I am so thankful you turned to reiki and did it as often as you were able. These are the stories I love to read and hear about. I wish you continued good health. Much reiki love to you. xxxx
