Remember how long the year between birthdays was when you were a child? Remember when it seemed December dragged on and on, and it seemed Christmas would never come? Children perceive time differently than adults. Imagine how the weeks and months of life changes due to the pandemic is affecting children around the world.
Many children are feeling isolated, as they cannot spend quality, in-person time with grandparents, other family members and friends. As imaginative persons, they can create scary scenarios in their minds. Some children will be returning to the classrooms this fall, while others will be attending school online.
You may be a parent, grandparent, aunt or uncle, or friend of a child. You want to help. As a Reiki practitioner, you have an extra tool in your toolbox!
Here are some ways you can support the children in your life:
- Invite children to talk about the good things, and the difficult things, of dealing with the pandemic.
- Be honest – without being scary – about your own feelings, joys and struggles.
- Give some information about the coronavirus, appropriate to age levels of understanding.
- Encourage children to draw their experiences. Cultivate other creative outlets, such as making crafts, baking, redecorating their bedrooms, etc.
- Spend as much time as possible in nature, in less-crowded spaces. Plant a garden, if at all possible, where you live.
- Provide Reiki treatments, join online yoga classes, and spend time in quiet meditation with them.
Let us examine this last suggestion in more detail. Many of us Reiki practitioners are spending more time in our homes, due to providing our own childcare or not being able to practice with in-person clients. This is the perfect time to schedule weekly sessions with family members, and pets, of all ages. As each person benefits from Reiki individually, the interactions between family members will become more peaceful.
Most young children will not remain quiet for a full hour session of Reiki. However, shorter, more frequent, sessions can provide calming reassurance to them.
Many of us may be facing the most difficult financial challenges that we have ever faced. We may be stressed and speak with cantankerous and impatient words. This increases the negative energies, within ourselves and others, and within our home environments. Children are intuitive beings and know when the adults in their lives are worried. Sharing appropriate information is helpful. Children can participate by coming up with their own ideas – buying ice cream at the supermarket rather than the local ice cream stand; finding clothes on sale; finding programs on the computer, rather than the movie theater. This will give them a sense of control over their environment, and over the pandemic.
As our lives continue to be affected on a daily basis, we can make choices to be calm and peaceful. And, we can bring this peacefulness to all family members.
