Reiki Attunement is the process for a Reiki Master to pass on the Universal Energy to their Student, so that they can use Reiki to heal themselves and others. Through the Attunement process, a person is able to access the Universal Life Force in order to heal and balance a person, place, or situation. Attunements can only be done and given by a Reiki master. The purpose of attunement is to empower the student with Universal Energy, so they can also heal themselves or others, as a Reiki Master does. It also enables them to pass on the Energy when and become a Reiki Master.
When one goes through attunement, they are permanently opening up their beings, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, to the Universal Life Force Energy. It becomes imprinted inside them on all the levels. Attunement also clears and balances the energy, so that the Universal Life Force Energy can be channelized in a proper manner. An imbalanced person can’t balance someone else. As the level of attunement occurs, the student learns more and goes to higher level in Reiki therapy. With each level of attunement, there is also a heightened level of spirituality and healing given to the student, who in turn can give to those receiving a treatment from them. Attunements are formal initiations.

People who have undergone the attunement process will attest to the fact that they feel a spirituality that is powerful and affects their lives effectively. In attunement ceremony, Reiki Master channelizes energy from Universal Life Force to themselves and then in turn, to the student receiving attunement. When a person is attuned, they can give Reiki to others for treatment.
It is fine to receive one attunement per Reiki study level; but some people receive multiple attunements in their life time, in order to keep heightening and tuning their level of spirituality and healing. Those who have undergone attunement process have said that they have experienced things like a higher sense of spiritual and psychic awareness after the attunement. Once a person receives attunement, the energy stays with them for the rest of their life.
The reason people may choose to have additional attunements is that they feel it refines the Reiki energy they channel. The feel with every attunement the energy they use is stronger as well as their level of consciousness and psychic awareness elevates.
