You’re the Storyteller Not the Story

I have been a television writer/producer for over twenty-five years, with most of that experience in children’s television. Storytelling and writing have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I was convinced that this was my passion and my calling. But, I had no idea how Reiki would enter into the picture and become the ultimate storytelling tool.

I became interested in Reiki sixteen years ago when I had a session that was literally life-changing. (That’s a story in itself, for a future article). My practitioner said I was very open and she felt I was meant to be a Reiki Master. Those words made quite an impact on me, as I had also felt that this experience was something that was going to be part of my life in a big way. Her words remained a whisper in my memory, as life was busy and demanding and we don’t always have the time or the guts to follow that little voice of desire, even though we may want to. But, as time passed, I could no longer silence this voice and felt it was a calling I was meant to listen to.

A few years ago, I started the journey to becoming a Reiki practitioner. I had a goal of becoming a Reiki Master by my 50th birthday. I didn’t want to start the second half of my life without it. At the time, I felt that Reiki would perhaps become my new career. I was careful not to mix the two sides of me. I thought that the writer/producer was one side and this was a new and perhaps more spiritual side, that could potentially intimidate people who knew me in my “real career”. Over time, I realized that, because of having the courage to walk this path and follow this passion for Reiki, the real me had emerged. My true voice was speaking and there was only one way to walk in this world. It became impossible not to share this passion with anyone who crossed my path.

Now, after over a year of being a Reiki Master Practitioner, seeing weekly clients and doing multiple distance healings and workshops, I have come to realize that Reiki is the ultimate storytelling tool. As we work on clients and enter into their energy fields, we can read their stories. We can tell if there is heartache or longing, grief that has not yet been addressed, confidence that was compromised in childhood, etc. Our energy does not lie. The experiences and trauma, guilt and grief… it’s in there. Through Reiki, we are able to empower our clients to tap into their own strengths and find their inner courage, to create the next chapters of their lives with confidence. It is truly the best tool for storytelling.

Each one of us is a storyteller and not the story. If someone has suffered from a loss and is grieving, fighting an illness or pain of an injury, or searching for a new beginning, Reiki is there to empower the client to be the hero of the story and not the victim. Seeing this shift in clients is so amazing. We are all here for a reason and are capable of so much more than we even realize. I am constantly overwhelmed by the way in which lives can change when perception is shifted.

I am convinced that Reiki was meant to come into my life, to help me in helping people write the next chapters of their life stories. I feel so grateful to have this tool and to be able to work with people and their energy, in this beautiful way.

There is no greater gift than to help other’s help themselves. To be able to help someone find light in the darkness is most definitely my true purpose. I am thrilled Reiki has come into my life and feel my best work lies ahead.
