A Reiki Master knows they haven’t mastered Reiki at all—they’ve committed to walking the path of self-mastery. When we decide to pass our experience on, we are experiencing sharers, guides, a friend to introduce a fellow seeker to a life-changing way of being in the world.
Why is this important to understand for those seeking a Reiki teacher?
The choice in our first, second, or heck, the twenty-seventh Reiki teacher, is a big deal. We need to be in alignment energetically and resonate with their teaching style. A choice in teacher is more than double checking their certificates, training, and years of experience. It’s seeing if you’re a match—do we trust this person to lead us deeper into our remembrance?
It’s less a choice of who is the right fit for you, but rather who is the right fit for you right now. Trust Reiki is bringing into your reality the teacher you most need for this moment in your life, not necessarily the teacher you most want. On my own Reiki journey, I’ve studied under many different mentors and guides. There have been times when I’ve shed teachers and never wanted to, or attracted teachers and didn’t think I needed them. Often I think of these teachers and their lessons like old postcards I’ve collected over the years—each with their own quips and wisdom.
There’s the white-haired crone, leaning over tarot cards and crystals telling me, “You’ve got to crack the egg to make the omelet.” The shaman (who would never say she was a shaman) dancing after meditation singing, “It’s all Light.” Red hair and throaty laughter—a teacher who became like a mother, walking beside me in a labyrinth. The one who taught me the healing in community and formed me, more than any of the others, into the practitioner I am today. The two medicine women who held me in my remembrance as I wept, realizing mentors are human—and by putting a mentor’s truth above my own, I’d hurt myself and others. “It’s okay to not be okay. It’s okay to grieve,” they whisper. “We all have to practice being human.”
It comes down to this one simple truth: The greatest Teacher you will ever find is within.
My heartfelt wish for my brothers and sisters new to the path and seeking a teacher is to allow your heart, body, and soul to lead you. You will likely have many teachers and each will have something unique to offer to your journey. If you ask, Reiki will guide you to the next step. Reiki is life force energy, and as much as one teacher or style of training may try to claim a monopoly on how Reiki is best taught—life force energy is something we are all born with and intuitively understand.
Reiki always leads us to the teachers meant for us, but she or he may not be who or what we are expecting. They may be a wise one on a mountain top—who never had a formal class but is performing healing miracles—or they may be a certified teacher who completed their master training class last week. Maybe we want someone with ten plus years of experience and is local, but we really resonate with a teacher five states away. Always follow the resonance, pulling you toward the next step.
Reiki pulls, but she also pushes when we don’t heed the call. Perhaps, we’ve been with a teacher for a while, but feel compelled away. It’s okay to outgrow our teachers, and it can be an incredibly healing to realize it’s within our power to thank a teacher for their lessons, and move on. Invite the Reiki in, and the Way will be shown.
Bright blessings on the journey, brothers and sisters.
