When I first started on my spiritual journey, I read all of the spiritual classics, including Louise Hay’s You Can Heal Your Life. I found the information very inspiring, and surprisingly simple. However the thought of doing affirmations throughout my day really overwhelmed me and seemed a bit unrealistic. I couldn’t really quite grasp how repeating phrases was going to actually change my life, or how I would actually believe the phrases I was repeating. I come from a lifetime of anxiety and perpetual negative thinking, so I had a hard time believing that affirmations could work for me.
After being on a spiritual journey for a few years, just a few months back, I finally reached the point where I needed to heal my childhood. I did a past life regression session, and my higher self said that traumatic experiences and beliefs from my childhood were holding me back. This was where my work was to be done. “Healing your childhood” sounds a bit cliche and overwhelming, but I had to dive in and look a bit closer into the past. I’ve struggled with anxiety and depression most of my life, and I could sense the limiting beliefs were still buried somewhere in my childhood.
I started practicing gestalt therapy on a weekly basis. In gestalt, you dialogue with an aspect or part of you, to uncover limiting beliefs. I already knew I had a lot of beliefs that weren’t working for me, but how do I change these? Therapy is crucial to uncovering limiting beliefs and working through how they took hold in the first place. But once you find out the ugly truth, you want those limiting beliefs out of there!
So here is where affirmations come in, and here is how to make affirmations work for you when they haven’t in the past:
Create your own unique affirmations
I’ve tried affirmations created by another person, and they simply don’t work for me. What has power for me is my own words. These affirmations vibrate at my frequency, and that is the essential combination that works for my “code”. I use my own personal process for creating affirmations, but you can do whatever works for you to come up with your own original content.
Record your affirmations in your own voice
I use the voice memo app in my phone, and read through the list of affirmations that I have written down. What works for me, is getting centered and grounded, in a quiet space. Then, with heart and feelings, saying the words as I feel them into the recording. That way, your recording will have the emotion necessary to create meaningful and powerful affirmations that you listen back to and will create change in your life.
Listen to your recording morning and night
I listen to my affirmation recording as part of my morning and bedtime routine. The recording is only about 4 minutes, so it takes virtually no time, and if I’m in a rush I can play it while I’m in the bathroom getting ready. The most important point here is truly feeling the words as they play, and visualizing. Make sure you’re in your heart as much as possible when hearing the affirmations.
Say your affirmations to your inner child throughout the day
This is kind of like the extra credit work. What I do, is I have a distinct image of my inner child in my head. She is 1 day old, and I am holding her. You can use whatever image or time in your life that resonates with you. Throughout the day, when something happens and I feel my inner child can use some love or needs to hear one of my affirmations, I will see her in my mind’s eye and affirm to her something from my recording. Depending on the situation, I may hug her and say “you are strong!” or “I believe in you!”. If this interaction feels good in your heart, then you know that it’s working.
Using Reiki while repeating an affirmation can magnify the power of it. Additional healing can be done in this manner.
The most important part about affirmations is that what they’re saying is resonating in your heart. If they make you feel good and your heart happy, you are literally changing your life. This is part of manifesting. Being in that feeling of love, is healing your past, present, and future. Just put a little heart in them, and then add them into your daily practice. If affirmations can work for me, then I promise they can work for you too!
