This article was inspired by the recent celebration of India’s most awaited festival known as Deepavali or Diwali. In English, it is known as the “Festival of Lights”. This festival signifies the victory of light over darkness. People give their homes a thorough clean up, light dozens of lamps around their homes, get together with friends and family and have a good time.
I have always been fascinated by the lamps that are lit during this festival. In the past, I personally lit lamps only as a tradition and admired their beauty. This time was different because I had a spiritual insight as to the significance of those lamps. I found that lighting lamps is a good opportunity to notice our own inner light.
Light is the essence of who we are. When our Light shines brightly, there is no place for darkness to stay. Any kind of darkness will be engulfed in Light and transmuted. If you can begin viewing yourself as the Light, your life will undergo a positive shift. You do not have to wait for the Festival of Lights or even celebrate it in order to notice the Light in you! It can be done every moment of every day and in every situation. For starters, practise the following meditation. With time, the essence of this meditation will become a part of you, after which you will not have to practise it consciously any more.
Meditation Technique
- Choose a space that is clean and quiet.
- Request Reiki to cleanse that space. Visualise the room being flooded with Reiki.
- Burn some incense and play soothing music if you like.
- Light one or more candles.
- Sit down facing the candlelight.
- Place your hand on your heart and tell yourself, “I am the Light.”
- Feel yourself becoming one with the Light. See yourself as abundant, pure, wise, loving, lovable, powerful and all things good.
- Request Reiki to help you absorb this truth. Use the mental-emotional symbol, power symbol and the Master symbol (for third Degree practitioners) and ask Reiki to flow as you repeat the words, “I am the Light.”
- Do this for as long as you feel like.
- Express your gratitude to Reiki and to the candlelight.
Do this meditation as a daily practice or at least whenever you find yourself feeling low, powerless, guilty, ashamed, jealous or anything else that saps you of energy. As you keep practising it, you will begin to notice subtle but powerful changes in the way you view yourself. All the terrible things you feel about yourself and the world stem from a place of darkness accumulated over lifetimes. The good news is that this darkness is just an illusion. None of it is who you are and none of it can match up to the power of the Light shining within you.
Can you see your own Light? Do not despair if you cannot see it as yet. One day, you will be able to see it because that is who you are and you cannot hide from your own self. This meditation will take you home to yourself; to the Light that you are.
