A fit and healthy 44 year old female came to see me desperate for help and assistance. She had a good life and was enjoying it immensely, apart from the fact she found herself irritable and cranky from lack of sleep, when her frozen shoulder played up. She was at her wits end and sick to death of paying out money to the chiropractor who she claims, wasn’t helping her in the least.
For the sake of this article, I will name my client ‘Sarah’.
Sarah had no preconceived ideas about Reiki, and chose to go with the Crystal Reiki that I offer, for the double dose of healing from both the crystals emitting their beautiful healing properties, as well as the glorious Reiki energy.
The first session was interesting to say the least. I discovered that her root/base chakra was blocked. This chakra is responsible for self-preservation, personal survival and our identification with the physical world. As it turned out Sarah was experiencing great problems with her neighbours and almost felt intimidated and frightened by them. Her fear of them stopped her from going outdoors as much as she would like, so she stayed inside the house.
Although her frozen shoulder issue had been ‘present’ many more years than the issue with the neighbours, I truly felt it had become worse because Sarah was ‘frozen’ with how to proceed with the family living next door… manifesting in her shoulder.
Considering I can’t direct Reiki to go to any particular area of the body, or to deal with any particular issue, I trusted it would go exactly where it was required, and I truly believed the biggest issues at this point in time, was the blocked root/base chakra and the irritation that Sarah was feeling when it came to her neighbours. Truth be told, it doesn’t matter what the Reiki Practitioner thinks is the problem, as the Reiki (coming from divine source and knowledge) will always flow precisely where it needs to.
I also sent Reiki into the future for Sarah, so contact might be more pleasant and amicable on the next few encounters. I also sent Reiki around her property, and concentrated on releasing and clearing her fear. I used the non-traditional symbol of Tamasura – which helps to release fear.
On conclusion of Sarah’s very first Reiki treatment she felt rejuvenated and relaxed. She felt much calmer, grounded and in control. She thoroughly enjoyed the experience and for weeks and months afterwards she was still feeling good and in control. The next door neighbours were not affecting her as much as they once did.
“REIKI DOESN’T ‘CURE’ ANYTHING BUT IT SURE CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE”
Therefore her 2nd session of Reiki was approximately 16 weeks after the first, and this time I definitely felt a change in energy around her left shoulder. I was now experiencing the heat generating in my palms as I touched her in this area. So as always I did an all over Reiki treatment, however I did concentrate on using my symbols and releasing the energy and tensions in the left shoulder. If the Reiki was meant to help this ailment then it would. If not that it would travel to the area it was meant to.
I used the non-traditional symbol of the Ra-Mu (the releasing symbol) to ‘unlock’ the frozen shoulder in conjunction with all four traditional Reiki symbols:
As with the first treatment Sarah felt totally rejuvenated afterwards, and advised that she felt no pain in her shoulder.
It would be five months before Sarah returned for another Crystal Reiki treatment. She bounced into my practice full of wonder and amazement of the power of Reiki.
Since that 2nd treatment she hadn’t experienced any further issues with her shoulder. In-fact she stated, her husband was AMAZED that Sarah could sleep on that side of her body. She had never been able to because of the severe and debilitating pain. Sarah tried to explain to her hubby, all about Reiki and fell short because she couldn’t find the words to describe it. All she could say is it’s the best feeling she has ever had. Her husband was astounded that Sarah had not returned to the chiropractor during the five months either. She truly had no further pain in her shoulder. She was overjoyed, because now she could sleep and was no longer in pain or irritable. It made a huge impact in her life.
This third treatment was one of pure relaxation for Sarah. It was a relaxing and invigorating session, where she was lost in a state of bliss and glory. The Reiki energy went to small areas of life that were out of balance and helped to rectify them in a very gently and non-invasive way. I could see Sarah almost float out of my room.
Now Sarah books in for a treatment whenever she feels the need, or her body indicates that a session is required. She loves it and vows by its healing abilities. She has been referring many people to me as well, which is a lovely indicator of her belief and faith. As a practitioner, to see such results, and to see the profound difference in a person – is rewarding and liberating.
Reiki is a gentle and yet powerful tool to help the body to help itself. I hope you find this case study useful in understanding Reiki just that little bit more.
With love, light and harmony.

Good article. I am suffering from chronic irritable bowel syndrome. Can Reiki help me? I have got attuned to first level reiki 5 years back. However i am not practicing it daily. Please advice me.
Thank you so much for your kindness of replying to me. Do I send reiki to all my chakras or should I concentrate on solar plexus?
Hello Beena,
I am a Master or Reiki and a DR.
you should practicing every day and sometimes go to a professional treatment .
if you want to ask me more please write me to mail
have a great day
Maayan
I do have the same (irritable bowel syndrome),and I couldn’t heal myself since 3years ago till now 🙁 don’t now where I am doing wrong…
I also have IBS. The reiki helps when I am in pain when I place my hands on my stomach. It hasn’t stopped the IBS occurring. However diet changes that I started doing before I learnt reiki have helped a lot. If I get IBS I know I have eaten something that I am intolerant to.THe IBS is the main reason I was attracted to reiki and am so pleased that I took that first step to learn Reiki 1. I don’t self reiki every day but I will attempt to do that from now on and see if it enables me to eat the foods I am intolerant to without getting sick or at least not getting as much pain as I used to.
I have found that practice is what I need the most. Heaven/Source gives us blessings but then we must do the ‘work’ to put those blessings into practice to increase our transformation. For some this could happen in a very short time, even instantly. For others, like me, it takes time. We may have lessons we need to learn before full transformation may occur. I hope this helps.
Dear Beena George,
I am no one to reply officially to your query. I can only say with the experience and knowledge I have got that once you are attuned for reiki, you are attuned for ever. You should start healing yourself and I am confident it will work for you for the health condition you have stated.
Thank you! when I locked at the Tamasura-Symbol – which I did not know so far – it made me feel like I immediately had to use it and as soon as I had the change I did it during giving Reiki to myself and I improved the condition of my back like with a magic wand! Really great!
Beena, yes if you have been attuned to Reiki, regardless of how long ago, then reiki will flow (as Col mentioned above). I would suggest to start doing your self-reiki every single day, and no doubt you’ll notice a difference in how you feel. Karin I’m so glad you resonated with the Tamasura symbol. Love, light and harmony. Tammy x
Thank you so much Tammy for your comments and inspiration. Happy to say that I have already started doing self reiki.
Hello & Happy Day to yous!! Was wondering if you have more information/website on the two symbols referred to above? Thank you for the inspiring story!
B:)
Hello BeSmylee (love the name!!!) These are NON-traditional symbols that my first Reiki Master taught me in Reiki Level 1, and I was attuned to. There are no websites that I’m aware of as I was never given one and have not been able to find anything myself. For further information for me, and for my students, I meditated on them to get ‘more’. If you like the look of them and feel drawn to them, may I suggest meditating and gaining your own insights? They have their basic meanings, such as the Tamasura (for releasing fear) and Ra-Mu (for releasing)… anything further will have to come from within. I hope that makes sense. Feel free to email me at [email protected] for any further assistance. Love, light and harmony. Tammy x
to say that reiki doesn’t cure anything is a gross misstatement…. it most certainly does cure things….. I have seen it time and time again….
Reiki itself does not cure anything. Reiki energy allows the body to help itself. Reiki energy allows the person to cope with injury and illness but Reiki does not cure. The person is able to help themselves after receiving Reiki. Reiki is the catalyst. This is taught in Reiki one. It’s why practioners are not healers but merely channels. I am amazed by the power of Reiki and have seen time and again the wonder of it. You have misinterpreted my statement. Reiki is fabulous but it’s power comes in it allowing the person, animal, plant etc to heal themselves. Reiki does not cure.
<3
Typically, for legal reasons, a nonmedical licensed person may not use the term ‘cure;’ otherwise, you could be accused of practicing medicine without a license. At least that is the situation in California. In order to ‘cure’ you have a diagnosis. Only medical doctors and a few other licensed professions have the legal right to diagnose and treat. What we do is spiritual reading of a person’s status – physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. We offer blessings which may transform their physical, mental, emotional or spiritual ‘blockages.’ We do not ‘diagnose, cure or treat.’ Be very careful. I know what you mean in your heart and understand. LYLYLY TYTYTY
Can these symbols be used by a reiki 2 practioner ? I love both of them? Thank you for the article
Hi Maryann, my Reiki 1 students can use it right from the beginning because they are attuned to the symbols. I am offering attunements for about 13 non-traditional symbols including these ones for $50 Australian dollars. If you are interested please email me at [email protected] Once the distance attunement to the symbols is done, you will also receive a certificate of symbol attunement. Love, light and harmony. Tammy x
Dear Tammy
Read this artilcle today..felt very attracted towards the symbols, have noted down with the intention to get it self attuned..wishing your permission for the same. Thanks a lot for the knowledge shared. Please intimate if I have the permission to get self attuned to the symbols shared by you in this article. GOD BLESS YOU
Hi Neelam, I do offer attunements for the Non-traditional symbols for $50 Australia dollars and this comes with a certificate. If you’d like me to attune you, please email me at [email protected]
Great article, I love the clear way you are able to exprress how your clients feel after treatment.have been attuned to reiki level three, and reiki seichim, starting about 20 years ago and use it often on myself and others both hands on and distant, but do not do it professionally. However I was not aware that we could be attuned to specific symbols, so could you explain the benefits of that over just visualising and using the symbols. Thankyou.
Hi Jeniren, thanks for your feedback. No doubt during your Reiki training you were attuned to the 4 traditional reiki symbols? I don’t know Seichim reiki as I do the Usui system of natural healing, however I believe most reiki lineages use the 4 symbols? Sei Hei ki, Chokurei, Hon Sha She Cho Nen, and the Do Ko Mayo (spelling might be incorrect). In my level 1 I was also attuned to many Non-traditional symbols. This means, as with any attunement, they have been brought into my body and soul from source. By being attuned to the symbols they can be used and are very powerful. By simply looking at them and using them without being attuned, they are basically meaningless. It’s like me looking at a witchcraft symbol. I have no real idea about the power of it or what it does. I hope this answers your question. Love, light and harmony. Tammy
Thanks Tammy. I was intitially attuned to Usui Reiki level 1 and 2 . I was shown and learnt first 3 symbolsin level two, but not not realise they were integral to the atunement and that you were attuned to specific symbols, so great to learn that now. I learnt reiki Seichim later and have a large number of symbols written on cards that I occassionally use, but I don’t keep them in my head. Its the first 3 that I use all the time The Do Ko Mayo I was not given with level two but have encountered it since, but don’t use it routinely and can’t even remember what it looks like, so I will look it up. Its good to see you talking about The Territory and Australian dollars, so presumably you live in Australia like me. It makes me feel a little closer to you, but I guess in this internet world it is no closer in contact than the other side of thew world.
Hi again Jeniren, yes I’m up in Darwin in the beautiful tropical and hot, top end. I love it up here. What part of Australia are you in? No you would not have been given the DKM in level 2 as this is the master symbol and only masters should use it as only masters have been attuned to it. How much difference is there between Usui and seichim? love, light and harmony. Tammy x
Hi Tammy. You’ve really made me think more about Reiki power and the importance of the symbols and lineage in Reiki. I attend Reiki share night once a month where we share reiki and it is interesting to see how people from different reiki backgrounds give reiki and emphasize different aspects of what they have leant. Sometimes eiki is given touching the body and at other times a little above the body, but not really ‘distant healing’ Reiki seichim is another lineage that we were told transmits the reiki energy in a shorter time. Since your question I just did a little research to find out more and remind myself of what I was told about 15 years ago. I learnt this and Usui Reiki here in Albury Wodonga on the NSW Victoria border where I have been living for 25 years from Sydney. Great to know reiki is alive and well in Darwin.
Thanks for the beautiful article.
I’m so glad you enjoyed the article Syed. With love, light and harmony. Tammy xxx
Hi Tammy – I thoroughly enjoy your articles. I was just wondering, although you mentioned that these symbols were ‘non-traditional’ – can you please advise what method they are based off of though? I know that there are so many (new) variations of Reiki now days, and am curious to know which one these are based off.
Namaste,
Trudy
Hi Trudy, I’m so glad you enjoy reading my articles. I certainly enjoy writing them. The only way I can answer your question is, I’m not sure what ‘method’ they are based off. The Reiki Master/Teacher I had for level 1 and 2 was trained in Usui and passed them along to her students. What I offer is a distant attunement for people who want to use the 13 non-traditional symbols for $52.50 Australian dollars and highly recommend when the booklet is received is they meditate on each symbol and ask their reiki guides for further and deeper information on how the symbols can help them individually with their reiki practice. I hope this helps answer your question. Big hugs. Love, light and harmony. Tammy xxx
Interesting article. Question. Will the non traditional symbols work for me if I have not been attuned to them? ie. I am a Reiki master to Usui. I have a client I use the inflammation symbol for in regards to the frozen shoulder.
Just read a response from above. My question is answered…
Hi Kim, I answered your question before I saw this post. LOL, have a great day. Tammy xxx
Hi Kim – thanks for your question/comment and I’m glad you found the article interesting. Amazing, Tammy! I’m so impressed with your story. I’m a Usui Reiki teacher, so the two symbols you described as ‘non-traditional’ are unfamiliar to me. Are they Karuna symbols? And could these two symbols be useful in my practice, even though they are unfamiliar to me? I have been Attuned with the 4 Traditional symbols plus two which my Reiki Teacher claimed were ‘Tibetan’ in Nature. But I’ve never seen Ra-Mu or Tamasura. Both seem ‘familiar’ to me, though … Thank you and Divine Reiki blessings to you and yours!
Hi Reiki RN – I’m also an Usui Reiki Master/ Teacher and was attuned to 13 non-traditional symbols in level 1. In recent times that particular Master, has been asked for further information on the symbols and has unfortunately not been very helpful (love and light to her)…. so unfortunately I don’t have much information on them apart from what I get through meditation. I do offer a distance attunement, booklet with all 13 symbols and a certificate of attunment once completed for $53.50 Australian dollars (think I put a wrong amount earlier in comments so apologise for any confusion), if this interests you. Then I strongly encourage you to meditate on the symbols to see how ‘source’ wants you to use the symbols in your practice. With love, light and harmony.
I was trained in Usui Reiki Levels I, II, III/Master Teacher back in 2000-2001. I have used it on myself and also studied further. Since 2005 I have been studying with a Chinese master who is a medical doctor, traditional Chinese medicine doctor and herbalist, Tao Oneness Calligraphy creator (honored by Chinese government for his high achievement), and much more. He explained the master-disciple-attunement process to us. He told us that a master has authority from Heaven/Source to pass on lineage wisdom, knowledge and practical techniques, usually by Crown Chakra Blessing (CCB). One or two are chosen in a generation for this honor. Only an ‘authority’ teacher may pass on through CCB. If one teaches and uses sacred symbols only a master or chosen disciple have authority to teach, it could create negative karma for that person. Heaven does not take lightly this authority. So, you are right in that anyone may trace the symbol but unless one has the ‘key’ authority, the symbol will not open its portal to secrets, wisdom, knowledge, healing blessings, and much more. I hope this helps. <3 <3 <3
I have a question, if not attuned to/with the non traditional symbols, will intention be enough to use these with the attuned ones?
