Reiki Rays

101 Reiki Answers Challenge

Today’s question:

Why do we need hand positions?

If Reiki energy is able to reach where it is supposed to, why do hand positions exist?

Angie’s answer:

When we say that Reiki goes where it needs to, the main meaning of that is that it will go to the root of any issues that need healing. It is because Reiki does this that we don’t need to be able to do any kind of diagnostic work or have any intuitive capabilities. Reiki brings our system very quickly into its own state of rest and repair, allowing the energy to shift wherever it needs to for the highest good. This process means that a Reiki treatment can help bring balance to both the symptomatic issue and the root issue that caused it, even if it is unseen. That might mean you treat the head and something shifts in the foot, or you treat the liver and something shifts in the client’s emotional life.

The hand positions are not meant to be rigidly clung to, but are used as guidelines. They closely follow the chakra system and the meridian system. Using the hand positions as a guideline to follow helps to ensure that the entire energy system is treated, thus supporting balance as fully as possible. However, if you have reason to focus on a particular area, such as pain or illness in that region, then it is certainly good to do so, as this will still help to bring about the rest and repair mode described above. Treating the head is almost always a good idea as this triggers this response very quickly, allowing the client to deeply rest, balance and heal.
