As we deal with the continuing ramifications of the coronavirus pandemic, each one will experience moments that are truly heartbreaking. These comprise the memories that will be forever with us. For me, one of the most difficult things to read, or see on television, are the patients who are dying alone. No family members are allowed in most hospital units. Working as a hospice social worker for many years, I witnessed how vitally important the presence of spouses, children and grandchildren was for the dying patient. And, how important it was for the grieving family to provide the loving support during final days and hours.
In some Jewish, Islamic and Christian traditions, there is an Archangel of Death, Azrael. The translation of the name Azrael is “Angel of God,” or “Help from God.” For all believers in an afterlife, death is a transition, from the earth to a spiritual world. Azrael assists in separating the soul from the etheric and physical bodies. Some believe he stays with the soul throughout the life review process, as this can be the most difficult part of the journey.
As a manifestation of Divine unconditional love, Archangel Azrael also assists the person during the physical dying process. He can alleviate pain and fear. He may urge the person to ask for forgiveness, making peace with loved ones and the Divine. Once forgiven, he can help the person to release any lingering anger, guilt, or shame. This time of preparation for the transition to the spirit world is essential. For those who die quickly from a sudden medical event, or an accident, he gives them this care, after the transition occurs.
Any staff person who is involved in caring for the patient during the dying process can also call upon Azrael. This includes physicians, nurses, support staff, hospice workers, chaplains, volunteers, caregivers in the home – anyone who works with the dying. Each one has an important role – in times like this, these roles can be overwhelming and exhausting. All of us can request Azrael to be with all health care workers and caregivers during this period.
Archangel Azrael is also associated with grief counseling for those left behind. Grief can be a long, painful process, and Azrael can provide compassionate comfort. He can also assist the grieving to move forward in practical ways. He may impart inspirational thoughts such as serving others through volunteering, or by reaching out to someone else who is grieving. He can also nudge the grieving person’s family members and friends to reach out to them. He is a very powerful being, assisting people in innumerable ways.
As Reiki practitioners, our roles in helping all people through these challenging times have endless possibilities. One of the most valuable tools is sending distant Reiki to all those directly affected by this pandemic, including patients, family members, healthcare workers and so on. Additionally, there are millions of people who are fortunate to not have direct experience with the virus, but their lives are greatly affected by unemployment, social distancing, and other practical considerations.
It seems everyone would benefit from Archangel Azrael’s compassionate love. Let us do whatever we can to bring this support onto earth right now. Daily use of distant Reiki and calling upon Divine angelic support is a powerful action.
