As we become more attuned to the realities of energy – how energy is everywhere, and in everything – we learn to appreciate how all sound affects us. The crash of ocean waves, birds chirping in our backyards, babies cooing (or crying), the list goes on – every sound affects our energy systems. This is the basic concept underlying all forms of sound healing.
Many of us have already incorporated sound healing into our everyday lives – often, it is in the form of playing or listening to music. Feel upset – play soft classical music; feel tired – play fast, staccato music; feel concerned about world problems – listen to the encouraging words in folk music. We live in an abundant world where access to many opportunities are available to each of us.
Playing music is one of the easiest forms of sound healing. If we feel drawn to add sound healing to our energy healing practices, we can explore a multitude of possibilities – chanting and other voice techniques, singing bowls, tuning forks, and many other forms.
Probably, most of us play recorded music during Reiki sessions. The energy emanating from the right kind of music can certainly enhance a Reiki session. Music can aid in relaxation or assist a person in letting go of anxieties or concerns.
Or, music can have the opposite effect. Certain forms of music can be grating on our ears, and detrimental to our energetic bodies. It has the potential to detract from a person’s experience of Reiki. As Reiki practitioners, it is our responsibility to choose an appropriate method of sound healing for Reiki sessions.
The next level of choosing the right kind of music is this – choosing the music that would be the most helpful for the client for that specific session. This is more than a cognitive decision; rather, it is a spiritually guided decision. There is one way to make that determination – set the intention to choose the most healing music, or sound healing modality, for the highest good of your client. Then, listen to your intuition. Your Reiki Spirit Guide will guide you towards what the client needs for the upcoming session.
Another beneficial exercise is to consider how sound and music have affected you in your own healing. I have a collection of CD’s I play during meditation/Reiki self-treatment; these are especially effective when I need to calm down after a hectic day at work or hear some unsettling news. When I do housecleaning, cook, read or write, I frequently turn our television on, to a station playing quiet, soothing spa music, to have in the background.
There have been a few memorable moments in my life when it seemed music took me to a transcendental state. One time was experiencing Evensong, an Episcopalian ritual, when a boys’ choir sang, in a large, famous cathedral. The crowd was small, but the effect was extraordinary. Another time, we went to an outdoors Tibetan horn program, and I was transported somewhere else. The healing that we can experience during such times is truly amazing.
Whenever we express gratitude for the gift of sound in our lives, we grow in appreciation for the many blessings of energy and potential of its healing for us – and everyone with whom we work.
