When we discuss or teach Reiki invariably the statement will be made by someone that Reiki can heal all manner of ailments, illnesses and diseases, and anyone who didn’t know better could be forgiven for thinking that there isn’t anything Reiki can’t do. Unfortunately a word we don’t hear as often as I would like is ‘potential’, in the context that Reiki has the potential to help us achieve some wondrous things in our lives. One of the greatest urban myths of Reiki is it’s sometimes portrayed as a miracle cure with the power to heal everything it touches. Unfortunately the principle may be sound but in practice it doesn’t work that way; if it were every Reiki teacher and practitioner would be healthy beyond imagination and have the ‘potential’ to outlive Methuselah. There is no denying that the energy we call Reiki is powerful, but it has neither the power nor the authority to override the universal laws that were instrumental in its creation. If Reiki is universal in its application then by its very existence it must abide by the universal laws that give it both meaning and purpose, it is impossible for it to exist or operate outside of those laws.
Free will and our ability to exercise our freedom of choice is the prime directive of creation and is the basis of all spiritual and physical development; what we appear to start in this life will be continued in spirit infernitum if we so choose, for the choice is always ours and we can never negate that responsibility, nor have it taken away from us by any healing modality or spiritual doctrine. The only person we can heal is ourselves, religious and spiritual texts state clearly in many ways ‘physician heal thy self’, and we must take on active part in the healing process for all healing ultimately comes to us through knowledge and understanding, healing requires first and foremost that the condition or cause is understood before a change can be brought about that we define as healing. A problem can never be solved or resolved by the same level of awareness that created it in the first place.
We along with all of creation are governed by the law of cause and effect; every cause has a point of creation be it physical, mental, emotional or spiritual, that once manifest must bring about a series of effects that in turn become causes for further effects and a chain reaction is set in motion. Our free will is the default mechanism that allows us to choose the actions we take and the consequences we must deal with.
Reiki will never force itself upon us, nor will it heal us against our will or in ignorance without first revealing to us through knowledge and understanding the true cause of the ailment, illness or disease. This offers us the opportunity to learn the lesson available and then address the underlying cause. To heal indiscriminately would rob us of our free will and deny us a valuable opportunity to develop and grow both physically and spiritually. What we fail to grasp from one experience will be presented to us in another way until we gain the required level of knowledge and understanding for balance to be restored. A problem can never be solved by the same level of awareness that created it. The universe is the ultimate teacher and no lesson goes unlearnt in this life or the next, Reiki is simply one of many teaching aids at its disposal but ultimately it is we who decide on how quickly we will progress through the lessons we are presented with.
Reiki is a spiritual teaching that is made real through a physical application that has the potential to help us bring about life changing experiences, but only if we choose to do so and are willing to put the work in to make it happen. For anything spiritual to work it must be practical, down to earth and be more than rhetoric or intellectual debate, Reiki is never an easy option or a quick fix and the rewards will always be proportional to the time, effort and energy you are willing to invest into your own health, happiness and peace of mind and spiritual well being. Reiki comes with the promise of potential but it never offers money back guarantees for each moment in time contains the potential for new life, new growth change and development, if that’s what we choose.
A Reiki practitioner since 1999, Phillip started teaching Reiki in 2000 and using those skills and abilities he has spent the majority of the last seventeen years working with a wide range of social and educational needs including Autism and ADHD. Working with addicts dependent on alcohol and drugs, people whose lives were extremely violent and abusive, and others who had to deal with severe mental health issues. This has enabled him to work extensively in the private sector, schools, colleges, education and care in the community, the prison service and psychiatric units.
In 2016, Phillip decided to semi-retire from full-time employment to concentrate on developing his career as a published author and the setting up of his Reiki personal development programme at the Chilton Community College.
